DD is a massive reader - she's 9.5 - she enjoys having a series to read. She likes mystery/spy type books but is open to all sorts. She didn't like the lemony snickett when we tried that unfortunately. Recent series that she enjoyed are:

Murder most unladylike
Sinclair Mysteries and the Taylor & Rose mysteries by Katherine Woodfine
Ruby Redfort - she's on the last book in this series and has really loved it.
Harry Potter

Any ideas for what she could try next?

For a series, try: Adventures on Trains by MG Leonard and Sam Sedgman; Pages and Co by Anna James; Cogheart by Peter Bunzl; Adventure Island by Helen Moss.
Good Thieves by Katherine Rundell, Voyage of the Sparrowhawk by Natasha Farrant and Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson are also well worth reading and would probably fit well with her tastes.

The Laura Marlin and Kat Wolfe Investigates series, both by Lauren St John

Fivemoreminutes1 · 25/05/2022 08:00

Enid Blyton’s Five Find-Outers series

My similar DD loves

The Roman Mysteries
Adventures on Trains
Violet and the... (by Harriet Whitehorn)

StarTwins · 25/05/2022 08:12

Wolves of Willoughby Chase series - although I think the first one in that series is actually the worst so you have to stick with it. Black Hearts in Battersea, Night birds on Nantucket, The Stolen Lake etc much better.

Cheerybigbottom · 25/05/2022 08:13

If she likes spy stuff she might like Artemis fowl. The box set was cheap in the works and my boy started them at 10.

SNWannabe · 25/05/2022 08:25

narnia series? Generally older books were written with more meaty language…so are often a challenge for modern readers.

the animals of farthing wood is a prime example of this… wonderful writing.

similarly books by Noel Streatfield. By encouraging her to read older books you will increase the depth of her reading ability- stretching her vocabulary and comprehension skills.

My DS loves the Pseudonymous Bosch 'Secret Series' which you can get in a box set. Also the Siobhan Dowd books 'The London Eye Mystery ' and the follow up about the Guggenheim museum.

If she enjoyed Harry Potter, how about:

A Wizard of Earthsea
The Dark is Rising

YingMei · 25/05/2022 19:01

Thanks all. She's read all the Laura Marlin ones, the violet ones and the Roman mysteries ! But there's some other new ideas here so thanks 😊

Try David Schutte books

He wrote the "Naitabal Mystery" series (look at his current catalogue and go right to the bottom. He'll write back to your dd if she writes about the books and will sign the books too if you ask him.

Ds loved the books although the secret language he spoke in for a while took a bit for me to understand. Grin

Try the Nowhere Emporium series by Ross MacKenzie. My 9year old loved them.

He also does other series.
