My son has special needs but quite enjoys reading. The problem that I am facing is that the books send home for him to read which are at his level really bore him. I wondered if anyone could recommend books that would not be too challenging but might engage him. He loves anything mechanical, staircases, doorbells (I know not exactly mainstream) but also space and the human body (he loves watching operation ouch).

Look up the publisher Barrington Stoke. They are ideal for this. Age appropriate content at a 'lower' reading age. Well written books by excellent writers with font choice and spacing all considered for ease of reading.

Factual books may be of more interest - he might like www.goodreads.com/book/show/304889.The_Way_Things_Work

My 7 year old loves the dog man and cat kid books (cartoon books) - they are really easy to read.

If he likes Non fiction, the Usbourne Beginners books could be ideal...

Mine has loved these for a while (he's 10 now) and graduated to Captain Underpants and is now on 13 Storey Treehouse.
What has also helped is having the audio book at the same time (from the library e book collection).

The Dogman books might be good, there is some slang and the some harder bits but as it is a comic strip the plot can be followed easily enough.

I second the Dog Man books.

My DS really likes the lift the flap questions books like this one

www.amazon.co.uk/Lift-Flap-Questions-Answers-About/dp/1409598993

There might be a human body one, and a "How things work" one which might interest him?
