My preschooler can't read yet, but is really enjoying Paddington at bedtime. The original version, with chapters and very few illustrations.

What can we read next? Nothing scary please.

My Naughty Little Sister
Mary Kate (I think this is out of print)
The bullerby children

How about "My naughty little sister". And there are some shirley hughes books which are almost chapter books Alfie outside and the ones about a street.

Hmm, I'm currently reading to my children Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and kids absolutely love it.
There's about 8 chapters and very few illustrations as well, through the book is very funny and enjoyable.

Millie Mollie Mandy
Older Noddy books have chapters in them
Faraway Tree

DaisyDozyDee · 05/04/2022 19:44

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf and Molly Molly Mandy are both very gentle and lovely for reading aloud for that age.
For shorter books with lots of illustrations, try the Rabbit and Bear series by Julian Gough and Nick Sharratt’s Cat and the King books.
Once they’re ready for a little more excitement/peril, then the Phillip Reeve/Sarah McIntyre books are hard to beat.

The original Noddy series by Enid Blyton was my fave, my daughter now enjoys them too.

SuperSocks · 05/04/2022 19:54

Winnie-the-Pooh?

@SuperSocks

Winnie-the-Pooh?
Beat me to it! Was just about to suggest Winnie-the-Pooh.

Faraway Tree

The Wishing Chair
Mrs Pepperpot

BritInAus · 06/04/2022 06:34

Some of the less scary Roald Dahls?
My daughter loved the Worst Witch books, they were our first chapter books I read aloud (nostalgia for me!)

birdglasspen2 · 06/04/2022 15:06

Mrs Pepperpot and Worst Witch are good. Dick King Smith....Sheep Pig?

SingToTheSky · 06/04/2022 15:11

I’m starting with the worst witch, pippi longstocking, and George’s marvellous medicine. Have nice illustrated copies of them.

Also iron giant but that may be scary, can’t remember!

GrandPrismatic · 07/04/2022 06:13

Wishing chair series, far-away tree series…these have kept us going for a while at one chapter a night. Basically anything by Enid Blyton was a hit and she’s got loads to get through.
