He's been a reluctant reader for the past few years and is being assessed for ASD. He enjoyed diary of a wimpy kid and captain underpants but obviously they are not at a level that will challenge him.

Any suggestions? I've read through the recent Horror thread and ordered a Stephen King book but would love to have something else to try.

It take a lot to get him engaged and can be put off by just the cover of the book or it's title. TIA

Following because my 9 year old is exactly the same. He's been given a box set of The Time Riders by a grandparent. Does anyone know if that is age appropriate?

Time Riders are great and very gripping. Lots of peril and historical content so might be a tiny buy scary of he's easily scared, but they are definitely middle grade, not teen reads.

Visit your local library. The staff will have great knowledge of children's and teen books and can steer you in the right direction.

That way, you can try loads of books for free

My local branch also has ebooks and audiobooks, which is good if you can't get to the library.

hi my little boy is a little younger but I know at least some of these his friends older siblings have enjoyed. We went to a independent bookstore yesterday and they recommended this Skandar and the unicorn thief it’s apparently really well writing and the author has a contract for seven books and a film. He loves ,wizards of once ( I think they are brilliant as well ) dragon rider , The explorer,( I read this to him and definitely think it would be good for a 10 year old ) storm keepers series, strange worlds series, pages and co. I think the others he had may be a bit young for your son but include how to train your dragon which he loves and all Enid boutons mystery series . I have also read him James Herriot I loved this as a child and some Gerald Durrell , he loved both but there is some swearing I missed out . If you take him to a bookshop and tell them what he likes they may be able to give recommendations.

Remembered another humour recommendation: Pamela Butchart. She's the author of a load of funny books with titles like The Spy Who Loved School Dinners, To Wee or Not to Wee.

Also, Kid Normal is hilarious and has 3 sequels.

Mine liked The History Keepers. He had a significantly higher than average reading age, but would only read the football reports in the newspapers ... (sadly, he is now over 20 and he has not read a book in years unless for studying)

If you search accelerated reader website, there is a uk version where you can put actual age and reading age and it will give you recommendations of what might be appropriate.

Also, ask his teacher - I had the same issue with dd and her teacher wrote me a list of books which she could try that were age-appropriate but would challenge her. And by year 6, her teachers told her to read for enjoyment as they were happy with her reading level and comprehension - that also helped, as she knew she didn't have to read to learn how to read, just for the pleasure of enjoying a good book.

What I would say is that I didn't have a reluctant reader and her teacher would let her swap a book she wasn't enjoying in the school library as long as she could argue why she didn't like it (so she had to have at least read the first 2 chapters and tell her what she didn't like!).

It definitely helps if you have the school on board and get their help.
