DD2 is a keen reader, but she's at a bit of an inbetweeny stage and I'm struggling to find books pitched at her level for independent reading. When she reads to me, she is reading titles such as The Worst Witch and The Iron Man, but the text is a little too dense for her to read alone - she can find it a bit daunting and still wants/needs a few pictures. She has recently read the Dogman, Flat Stanley, and Billy And The Mini Monsters series, and is currently burning through The Princess In Black series. Each book is taking a day or less despite only reading first thing in the morning and for 1/2hr each night, so whilst she is enjoying them, they aren't presenting much of a challenge. She has now read all of the books passed on from her sister except the Rainbow Magic books (which she didn't enjoy), and I am out of ideas of what to give her next. She does re-read books, but generally not more than once.
Does anyone have any suggestions that might last her at least a few days before being added to the 'done' pile please?

Can you take her to a library and let her choose?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/03/2022 10:13

I was going to recommend Clause books, but they may be a bit simple.

The Usbourne Young readers are great... we got a box set from Books2Door. www.books2door.com/products/the-usborne-reading-collection-for-confident-readers-40-books-ages-5-7-paperback?_pos=1&_sid=ac642c023&_ss=r
They have easier sets too

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/03/2022 11:00

Just noticed a typo in my previous post... it was Claude books by Alex T Smith.

We are rural, so no library close by. I tend to avoid it also because I invariably forget to return them in time and get massively stung with fines. It is cheaper to buy second hand and resell once done. She does pick books from charity shops when we're in town and gets to choose a book a week from the school library, although neither of those quite helps with the current issue. We have a house full of books, it's just trying to find ones that are matching her current level that's a problem. She's between the 'Early Reader'-style starter chapter books and easier proper chapter books, and I'm struggling to find something suitable to fill the gap until her stamina increases. Hopefully it will be a short-term problem!

There are some Winnie the Witch books aimed at 5-8 year olds that might be worth a look.

Tittyfilarious · 28/03/2022 12:40

@SkankingMopoke if you go on the works website they usually have a 10 for 10 pounds promotion and they are books usually aimed at 5 to 8

Frozentoo · 28/03/2022 12:51

The Bolds series by Julian Clary?
Rabbit and Bear series - can't remember who by though these might be a bit too easy
Mr Penguin series by Alex T Smith

OkyDoke · 28/03/2022 12:53

The Kitty series? and Isadora Moon?

Frozentoo · 28/03/2022 12:57

Also the Mr Gum series - By Andy Stanton (I think?)
And Toto the Ninja cat series by Dermot O'Leary randomly

DoorLion · 28/03/2022 13:03

Our library doesn’t fine children if you get books out on their card, also they send reminder emails and you can renew books online, all of which has been massively helpful to me as a forgetful person! Does yours definitely not do this?
We have a copy of My Naughty Little Sister which has lots of pictures - if you are buying secondhand you can sometimes find more picture based versions of books like the Magic Faraway Tree or Milly Molly Mandy.

DD went from Princess in black to the Jolley Rogers and winnie the witch reading books and then onto Harry Potter illustrated.

Even at 8 and an excellent reader she rereads the princess in black a lot (tbf they are quite funny).

I would recommend adding some comic books into the bookcase I found it makes up for moving onto books with fewer pictures. DD loves the Hilda series (the comics not the netflix cartoon text tie in) and we are currently trialling a subscription to the Phoenix comic but the Phoemix is aimed at 7 and above I think. Maybe Beano?

DoorLion We haven't used the library for a few years, so it may have changed in that time. However, my last visit most definitely involved fines. DH came home from town one day very excited that he'd registered both DCs with the library and borrowed a number of books for each DC. I told him he'd need to take on responsibility for that as I had enough on my plate without needing to remember to return books as well. Their first few months created a few small fines, but nothing awful (apparently) and I didn't get involved. Then some time later I was heading into town and he asked me to drop some books back on my way past because they were due to be returned. It turns out they were already well overdue. 20-bloody-quid they cost me! I was stunned and have refused to let them use the library since. I can pick up books cheaply enough second hand, and the resale (which can be done at my leisure!) is never far off what I paid. Less stress and cheaper overall.

Thank you all! Lots of really good suggestions here to investigate Smile

liquidrevolution I am going to take a look at The Phoenix too - 7yo DD1 also loves comics, so it could make a good joint subscription with birthdays on the horizon. The illustrated Harry Potters may also be a good shout in time. Our copy of The Iron Man is the Chris Mould illustrated version, and it makes it feel a far less daunting read.

My DD is 5 and she likes reading horrid Henry books

GCNC · 28/03/2022 21:55

Dory Fantasmagory, Zoey and Sassafras- both great series, chapter books aimed at this age range.

That was my suggestion!

They’re the Oxford read at home stage 4, 5 and 6 ones.

I also found out recently that Bloomsbury do a young reader series which are white/lime level.

Mine is currently costing me a fortune in Project X Alien adventure books because they love the little alien in them!

pompomseverywhere · 28/03/2022 22:04

Milly molly Mandy?
