Robert Muchamore - Cherub Series - does anyone know them? Suitable for what age?

At church today dS1 (10) was chatting to a lad a couple of years older than him about books/authors/reading etc. [Hooray]

Anyway this lad has recommend Muchamore: Cherub series and has promised to lend them to ds1. Having just looked at the titles and covers on Amazon I'm wondering whether they might be a bit rich for his blood?

Does anyone know them?

My 12-year-old DS loves these books so have just asked his advice. Apparently they have "language and stuff" and are quite teenagerish. He says he wouldn't recommend them for a 10-year-old! Which is strange because I'm sure he wasn't much older than that when he started reading them himself...

My son, who's 10, adores them.

thanks wordgirl

Hmm ... interesting!
I've just read a few pages from the 'see inside' feature on Amazon, and found it rather violent tbh. But ds1 would probably love it.

Could you ask your ds how it compares (in 'older content') to, say, the Alex Rider or Young Bond or H.I.V.E. books? (Does it have any sex/relationships?)

Apparently it's definitely more 'adult' in content than Alex Rider or Young Bond. DS claims he was fine to read it at 10 because he's a "responsible reader"

I have asked ds1 (10) who was given one by his english teacher - I did a thread about it actually, I thought it was unsuitable but then decided not to worry because he enjoyed them so much. He has read a number now.

He said 'YES it is violent. People get slammed in their temples and fall to the ground'

and then he said 'sometimes at the start of the book James and his girlfriend kiss and things' and then he paused and said 'and they do it at the end too sometimes.'

So there we go.

I think DS probably likes them because they have that teenagery element tbh.

Then he popped back just now and said 'and there is light swearing'.

LOL.

I didn't press him on what exactly constitutes light swearing.

My Yr 7s read them and love them so 11-12.

roisin · 06/01/2008 20:33

I'll
let you know what he thinks of them

My 12 year old loves them. He is an action/adventure nut. As a teacher, I love the fact that he has found a series he loves and can't put down. I think they are geared more toward middle school to high school. Some drug content and violence. Another series he loves was the Alex Rider series.
