Trains

I’m a Grief Support Worker and am currently supporting a 12 year old who is grieving his mum. His face absolutely lights up when he talks about his love of trains. I want to get him a gift for our last session and I think/hope he might like a book about trains. He’s very bright and articulate and I think could cope with an adult level of detail. I’ve had a browse online but have no clue really, can anyone help please? Also, he has been enjoying some mindful colouring - is there such a thing as a decent colouring book of trains?! I have googled already but everything I find is for very young children. Thanks!

That's lovely.

How about the National railway museum shop? This, for example...

How about "Rails around the World" by Brian Solomon. I think you can get illustrated encyclopedias for trains too.

What about a DK book? We have found they can give pleasure over a number of years as children come back to them time and again, even if some of the info is a little advanced at first. This one looks good...

Thank you so much everyone! And thanks @JacquelineCarlyle, he’s such a nice boy I’m so hoping he will like it, he more than deserves it.

Another vote for the Adventures on Trains series. My train mad DS9 loves them. The author Sam Sedgman also wrote 'Epic Adventures', which is a bit like an encyclopedia of cool train journeys.

Lonely Planet's 'How Trains Work' is a lovely book. And not colouring as such but Usborne do a 'Build your own Train' sticker book which is also cool.

Also, what a lovely thing to do, bless you.

Does he prefer steam or diesel traction?

Anything by Ian Allen publishing is usually good quality if you are after adult detail. There are also lots of great DVDs he might enjoy - cab ride films are always interesting, especially if you can find one in a meaningful location.

You mention colouring - there are lots of steam engine 'paint by numbers' kits if that might be something he'd enjoy (take your pick from eBay/Amazon).

I hope you find the right thing and that it's a comfort to him.
