Puberty books for 8 year old girl

Any recommendations for an easy to understand puberty book for an 8 year old? I've had a look on amazon and there's so many to choose from.
I'm looking something that will explain things but not too detailed, maybe no sex ed. Or should she be learning about this now?

She's quite immature compared to some 8 year olds (or maybe they've grown up too quickly?) but i'm starting to notice changes with her body&mood so i'm thinking now is the time to explain things. I'm going to be rubbish at explaining things so the book will help me too lol

Following, looking for similar with my 8 year old DD. She knows where babies come from (I hope!) But I haven't spoken to her about periods yet and don't really know where to begin?

cakeandcustard · 09/01/2022 20:11

I should say, I have talked to her about sex but I'm not sure how much she took on/can rememberHmm

I used a book called whats happening to me..my dd was about 8...boys and girls versions..you can preview on amazon

Comedycook · 09/01/2022 20:13

I bought my DD a book called The care and keeping of you

WelshRain · 09/01/2022 20:19

Usborne "what's happening to me" as per PP said. I only have the boys one but it was a good introduction to puberty.

Digestive28 · 09/01/2022 20:23

Adam Kay does a brilliant kids biology book that includes reproduction and puberty section in it.

Chilver · 09/01/2022 20:24

I’v literally just read the first few chapters with my 9yo daughter tonight of Usborne’s Growing up for Girls. I skim read it in advance to check the content and it is nicely presented, mainly focusing on puberty and changes to your body in an age appropriate way. I have another in the cupboard that has more cartoon graphics on sex and sexual development but leaving that for another year or so, right now she is interested in when her periods will start!

Minnie123456 · 10/01/2022 22:11

Thanks everyone, I ordered What's happening to me and Brilliant Questions about growing up, I think this book might be too advanced but i'll have a read through it and see if there are any bits we can use now.

@cakeandcustard dd knows that a baby grows in your tummy but not how it gets in there or gets outBlush, she knows how she was born as she was a c section. I'm dreading these growing up conversations lol

On periods specifically, I highly recommend Milli Hill's "My Period: Find your flow and feel proud of your period!"

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1526363372/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_37X884QE7JT2K4JSZR9G?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It's aimed at 9+ but I read it with my 8 year old and she loved it, and feels good about the idea of starting her period now

The book's not just about periods but also about listening to your body and learning about how your cycle works, which gives girls a much deeper understanding of what a period actually is, instead of just focusing on the pain or mess.

It's written with humour, pitched just right for this age.

I need a more general puberty book for her too so watching this thread with interest, thanks OP!

OP, come on. You need to get a grip. If you're going to be all embarrassed about this what chance does your daughter stand? It is important. What is the problem? You have a body? She has a body? What?

SoreWing · 27/01/2022 03:21

Seriously though I'm not sure 'find your flow and feel proud of your period' would have done it for me at 8. I might be wrong. What is a period actually is then?

CPDubs · 27/01/2022 04:00

So my mum moved abroad when I was 7 and I got my period at 8 Confused

She bought this book for me and sent it over. I don’t remember much of it now but at the time it helped a lot. Was presented in a humorous way and didn’t make anything too scary.

As I said, the book teaches about your whole cycle. not only your period. I remember being taught that periods happened because my body was renewing the womb lining every month, and would get rid of the old womb lining when there was no baby. But I didn't understand about the whole cycle, about what was going on in between periods or how it might affect me.

There's much more emphasis on that in Milli Hill's book, on getting to know your cycle, listening to your body, how you feel at different times of the month and taking care of yourself. It's empowering and better than just focusing on the negative "you will bleed once a month" IMO.

I only learnt about cycles when I wanted to understand it for the purposes of avoiding - and later trying for - conception. But this book puts them in context of simply understanding your body and how it works, which is a nice approach IMO.

This. Very age appropriate. There is a second book for age 12+ which is the next step up.
Minnie123456 · 29/01/2022 08:43

@SoreWing thanks for your opinion but I think my daughter will turn out fine. My mum hardly spoke to me about anything, literally about a 5 minute talk, I turned out fine but I would like to give my daughter more info&understanding. I am a shy person and can't change who I am.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

If shes very young in emotions etc then babette coles 'hair in funny places' is excellent. My daughter has early puberty and we used it at age 6/7 to help her understand what was going on.

I find a lot of the books that pop up on amazon and are american so the language is different. I have the care and keeping of you but Im currently looking for a uk version.
