So DS really liked the Harry Potter series, and had re-read them a few times.
What else would he like that is similar?

Just reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Well, it's the audio version so perfect choice for night time listening. Hope the author eventually writes a sequel 🤞.

I'd also go for the younger Terry Pratchett books, the Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.for example.
And the Dark is Rising series.

Magisterium by Holly Black & Cassandra Clare
The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy
His Dark Materials
Lord of the Rings
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud

If he's OK with something a bit spooky, try The Saga of Darren Shan. Cirque Du Freak is the first. It's about a boy who becomes a vampire.

cookiemonster2468 · 14/12/2021 05:23

Alex Rider also worth a look

Thank you, lots of ideas to consider.

The dark is riding sequence by Susan cooper is great too.

I second pretty much everything above, and add:

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan

MisgenderedSwan · 14/12/2021 06:53

The Nevermore series is good - a girl who finds she has 'magic', similar magical world, beautiful descriptions and compelling stories.

lliitttlepiinkhouse · 14/12/2021 06:54

A series of unfortunate events is good!

Archie Greene series
A Wizard of Earthsea
Another vote for The Dark is Rising

Percy Jackson filled the hole best for my DD - they have the same addictive re-readability

NancyDrawed · 14/12/2021 13:57

My DS enjoyed the Inkheart trilogy after HP. Bit dark in places but once you're in the story it's mostly compelling.

Absolutely recommend Percy Jackson, (imo it's better than Harry Potter and will alway be my childhood favourite) I can't wait for my kids to be old enough for me to read PJ to them. The follow on series are also good because the reading age goes up a little each time so they develop with the child.

Alex Rider and Cherub are great too.
