Book for teen with dog protagonist

I always get the Dc books for Christmas "from the dog".

This year the dog is very poorly and likely won't see Christmas. I've decided to still get the books as a last gift and memory from him.

I have something for the younger Dc, but stuck for 14yo Dd.

I'd like a book which has a dog as one of the characters (or it could be a fox or wolf maybe).
It's likely to have a bit of sentimental value, so something that can be kept, reread.

Ideally on the gentle, heartwarming side, as we are all quite sad at the moment.

Flowers I'm so sorry.

It's not heartwarming exactly, but would a collector's edition of White Fang do the job? Or there are places that do a bound book of photographs - you could get one with lots of photos of your family and ddog.

Saucery · 10/12/2021 18:26

Has she read Lassie Come Home or The Incredible Journey? Or White Fang, by Jack London?

I’m sorry your family are facing losing your boy Flowers

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2021 18:27

This, maybe.

fernsandlilies · 10/12/2021 18:29

maybe this:

the boy the mole the fox and the horse

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 18:31

Marley & Me?

It is heartwarming but sad too…

Wolf brother by Michelle Paver

Saucery · 10/12/2021 18:35

How about the Olive And Mabel books by Andrew Cotter? The first one is about dog ownership in general as well as his own dogs and their rise to stardom in 2020. It has some very touching passages about losing a beloved dog.
The second one is more of a diary. Interesting but more about adult feelings in the lockdown and the power of dogs to help people get through it.

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 18:36

Oh, actually I know!

By the same author as A Dog’s Purpose is a novel about a teen - I think it’s A Dog’s Journey?

fernsandlilies · 10/12/2021 18:37

I enjoyed this, it is about dogs who can sense illness and how the owner trains them as well as her own story;

Daisy's Gift

TheMagiciansNiece · 10/12/2021 18:38

The Call of the Wild

Flippingfair · 10/12/2021 18:38

Wolf Brother is excellent. My tweens/teens and I all enjoyed the whole series.
So sorry about your dog xx

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 18:46

@Baboutheocelot

Wolf brother by Michelle Paver
That’s a great suggestion if your teen likes fantasy. Actually if they like fantasy there’s often loads of good dog/animal characters.

I also just thought of Red Dog by Louis De Bernieres.

My absolute favourite dog book as a child was A Dog So Small by Phillipa Pearce. Might be too young but it is a classic…

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 18:48

Also Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones is another classic.

Saucery · 10/12/2021 18:50

Oh, how could I have forgotten Dogsbody! It’s just wonderful.

CinnamonEstella · 10/12/2021 18:55

Thank you, I will go to Waterstones to look at all of these.

I think White Fang might be a good idea, but doesn't it end tragically? I haven't read it since I was a teen myself, so might be misremembering.

We are getting a canvas print for each Dc of their favourite photo for their bedrooms too, but a photo album is a nice idea as well.

'Fluke' by James Herbert. There's a terrible movie of the same name but you should ignore that!! Story of a man who is reincarnated as a dog and goes on a journey to save his wife and child from his murderer.

This was also going to be my suggestion.

Very much not like the rest of his books!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2021 20:29

Call of the Wild ends tragically, but White Fang (while harrowing in parts) has an incredibly heartwarming ending. I can tell you but don't want to spoil it inadvertently.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2021 20:31

Oh, also My Dog Tulip! Especially if your dog is a GSD, but any dog owner will relate to it.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2021 20:34

Or Flush by Virginia Woolf - about a spaniel.

CatChant · 10/12/2021 20:38

Another vote for Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.

The Dog Who Rescues Cats: The True Story of Ginny by Philip Gonzalez.

Keladrythesaviour · 10/12/2021 20:39

The Sight by David Clement Davies. It's a big book, but I was about 14 when I read it (but was a strong reader, so you'd have to judge level). His previous book Firebringer is told from a Deer's perspective and is superb. I really enjoyed The Sight but Firebringer was better. Both worth a read!!

NoSquirrels · 10/12/2021 22:41

The more I think about it the more I think Dogsbody is your one, OP.

In fact I might need to read it again.
