Some of you will know of some of the frustrations I have had with ds2 and his reluctance to read and engage with fiction beyond the level of Horrid Henry or Astrosaurs or similar.

Over the past week he has read Silverfin (384 pp) and really enjoyed it. We've had a little chat and he's said that it was a far better book than the shorter books he usually reads.

He admits that it does require a bit more effort and motivation, but he said once he got into it he found it quite easy; and that in any case it is far more worthwhile and rewarding at the end.

In the past I have said he's turned a corner, and then he hasn't continued. But I hope he is seriously getting there now. This week he has chosen to spend time reading for pleasure rather than playing on his DS.

Excellent news Roisin
I've recommended Tunnels to a parent at ds' school whose son is a capable but uninterested reader

That's a good book. It's well-written and quite intelligent. And long!
Good choice Roisin's ds!

Has he tried Antony Horowitz (Alex Rider books)? He'd probably enjoy those too.

I just want to keep plugging away with him really. It's partly my fault as some evenings I am just so exhausted from work that I don't want to read with him and/or listen to him read and then he loses momentum.

He loves the little books and yesterday bought a copy of one of the Cornelia Funke Ghosthunters books (144pp) and read it immediately. I don't mind him reading little books like that, but I'd like him to be moving on to more challenging material.

On a tangent - has anyone come across Frank Beddor: The Looking Glass Wars? They are very odd - make Lewis Carroll's writing seem coherent and logical! I tried and gave up reading the first one but ds1 loved it. Yesterday he bought the sequel Seeing Redd and couldn't put it down until he'd finished it!
