I really don't want to go down the Horrid Henry route yet...I think they might be too old anyway, but more to the point - all that naughtiness! Please no encouragement! Not yet, anyway.

I got Bimbo and Topsy (Enid B) for 20p in a charity shop and it has been a much bigger hit than I would have thought. Anything as gentle as that to recommend??

What about Flat Stanley ?

Magic Faraway Tree
Flat Stanley

Have to say that my 5yo loves My Naughty Little Sister, Horrid Henry, Worst With and Naught Amelia Jane - hasn't affected her behaviour though

We also have a few Enid Blyton books with lots of little stories in them which DD really likes. She particularly likes the ones with stories in about Mr Twiddle.

My Ds loved the "My Naughty Little Sister" books from about that age. They are very gentle and soothing for a bedtime read.

Secret Seven?

I agree about Horrid Henry - I don't believe in banning books, but he's not allowed in my house! And I do think he's different from My Naughty Little Sister - I don't mind the naughtiness, but I really don't like that the boy who behaves well is depicted so very negatively. And I don't like the fact that Henry always comes out on top, no matter how unkindly and unpleasantly he has behaves.

Oh, and don't forget the Sophie books, by Dick King Smith - theya re wonderful!

DS1 had lots of Roald Dahl at age.

Why not try him on the Secret Seven if EB is a hit? It would be fine for a four-year-old IMO.

Hi I've got a 4 yo boy and - not very original, but we've worked our way through all 3 Enchanted Wood books and are now doing The Wishing Chair ones. He does really love them and even though I think I'm a bit of a literary snob, they really are quite bearable to read (although did decide to censor the golliwog bits and the excessive amounts of spanking in the Wishing Chair ones, as we had an unreconstructed edition - the Enchanted Wood edition we had was updated).

Books I have read to my class have included the owl that was afraid of the dark, Jeremiah in the Dark Woods by Allan Ahlberg (a fav, Mr. Majeika by Humphrey Carpenter and some of the simpler Dick King Smith books.
