Children’s historical fiction - series suggestions

I’m putting together a list - wondered if anyone could suggest a good series of books, which follows a family through generations? I’m thinking of series like the wonderful Mantlemass Chronicles by Barbara Willard, or the Carey novels by Ronald Welch.

Well, there’s the great Rosemary Sutcliff whose Romano British series starting with The Eagle of the Ninth follows the same family through the generations. My favourite is The Lantern Bearers, set at the time of the Roman withdrawal from Britain. But they’re all wonderful.

Also, on a more modern note Hilary McKay has written two books about the same family, The Skylarks’ War, set in World War 1, and The Swallows’Flight, set in World War 2. I haven’t read the second one yet, but if it’s as good as the first it will be excellent.

The Greene Knowe books by Lucy M Boston would fit your brief- not sure they are still in print though.

I WENT to Green Knowe over the summer, and the books were definitely still available Grin.
Also look for Cynthia Hartnett and Leon Garfield.

The Penderwick Chronicles is about the same group of children but not sure the time span is enough for you.

BlueChampagne · 20/09/2021 13:15

DuneFan have a super time! You can book a tour of the house with the author's daughter-in-law.

You can go. It's wonderful, for lots of reasons.

My favourite series I got hold of aged about 14 was The Dark Is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. Don't see the film first, the books are the real deal.

Ormally · 24/09/2021 22:38

Oh, and Lucy M Boston's memoirs are also worth sniffing out, for grown up Green Knowe fans - Perverse and Foolish and Memory in a House.

BlueChampagne · 27/09/2021 15:17

Loved The Dark is Rising too Ormally. Thanks for the tips on Lucy Boston's memoirs, I shall seek them out.

Some great suggestions - thank you for Green Knowe reminder!
For Sutcliff and Harnett fans this is a good read.

A few years ago there was a site that listed books set in different time periods. It was comprehensive and brilliant. Anyone seen something similar?
