i read this a couple of years ago, or three, and remmber being not very impressed withit. i thought it to adult to be a childs book, with adult themes and adult language. yet to childish to be an adult book.
anyways, scroll forward a few years......
ds, aged 10.5. hates reading, but reasonably intelligent. we have just read the first chapter together. a sort of mummy and me time thing. and i feel it is way way too hard for him. the language used etc. is this most likly because ds isnt very good at reading because he hates reading. or is it really too difficult for ten year olds?

i just thought we could perhaps read it before we went to see the film, andhe might even enjoy th ebook more. iywim. didnt work with narnia, but i live in hope.

I too want DS1 to read the book before seeing the film, but at 9 (and a good but certainly not avid reader) I think it's too complex for him. I thought they were fantastic books, though number 3 tailed off a bit.

Tintin and Asterix are both favourites with my Beano-loving sons (9 and 6).

DH and I decided the best thing would be for us to see the film and then get the DVD for DD as it might be a bit hard to follow and/or scary (she's a bit of a wimp with films)...and the book can keep a few years. Nice thing about books, they don't age!

just saw the film. i know, probly the last family in the world to see it.
anyways, i think it is much much better than the book.

If your ds won't read fiction, try him with story tapes/cds.

My Ds is a reluctant reader but will listen to tapes which we get out of the library.
He will read non fiction such Guiness book of records, top gear magazine, but other than HP won't read a whole book.

We got him the complete series of Unfortunate Events on CD for xmas and is listening to a cd a night, when he goes to bed.
HIs english teacher is fine with this because at least he is accessing fiction.
