Books for 6yo that have pictures

Could I please have recommendations for books suitable for a 6yo boy that has some pictures as this is what he prefers? This is for us to read to him.

I’m looking for picture books that are a bit more for his age as we are finding that most picture books at our library seem to be aimed at younger children (aware I need to ask a librarian for help).

He likes all kinds of stories but not ones like Roald Dahl yet (he thinks the characters are mean etc!). I got several illustrated The Magic Faraway Tree books from the library and he loved those.

Claude books by Alex T Smith

The Rabbit and Bear books are a big hit here. Julian Gough.

Claude or Mr Penguin books by Alex T Smith.

I second the Claude books. The Ottoline series of books by Chris Riddell have fantastic illustrations throughout (and are really integrated into the story).

The Cat and the King by Nick Sharratt is funny and in that same accessible, picture-filled format.

Kevin and the Biscuit Bandits is about a flying pony who loves biscuits, by Reeves and McIntyre. There are four of these.

My now- 9 year old DS loved DogMan, WimpyKid and Walliams, but I hate the writing style of Walliams' later books - really repetitious and lazy.

Give Pippi Longstocking a go too - the Lauren Child illustrated ones are great - unexpected and laugh-out-loud.

Agree Rabbit and Bear, also Billy and the Mini Monsters are a big hit here - they have bits like comic pages which my 5 year old loves. Also good for them to start to read themselves afterwards.

There are lots of pictures books that are aimed at slightly older children but they can be harder to identify amongst the Julia Donaldsons etc. Some books that my almost-7 year old loves are: The Daybthe Crayons Quit, Journey (this one is wordless and is the first in a series), Lots (Marc Martin), Everybody Counts (Kristin Roskifte), Hidden Adventures (Lara Hawthorne), Flat Stanley, Choose Sloths, Meerkat Mail. He enjoys the Alberg Happy Families series and Where's Wally? He also enjoys Asterisk, but you need to be slightly careful with racism and sexism in these due to their age. For chapter books he enjoys the Boy Who Grew Dragons series, the Worst Witch series, Truckers/Diggers/Wings by Terry Pratchett, Captain Cat and Toto the Ninja Cat, all of which have some pictures.

We're reading Billy and the Mini Monsters. It is a chapter book but in a more cartoony style so lots of pictures on every page. There's a series of them and very entertaining.

  • The Jolley-Rogers series by Jonny Duddle
  • Ricky Ricotta's mighty robot
  • Famous five Short stories and the wishing chair adventure stories are the same style as the short colour ones of the faraway tree
  • The gaskitt stories by Allan Ahlberg

Captain Underpants, and 13 Storey Treehouse have both gone down well here.

BlueChampagne · 19/08/2021 16:30

Winnie the Witch
How to Train your Dragon comes with little line drawings by the author if that's enough. They're great stories for kids and adults.
Don't discount non-fiction books too.

robotcollision · 19/08/2021 16:50

Try the Eddy Stone books. They are funny but the characters aren't too mean and they have great illustrations on lots of the pages. Series of three books.

robotcollision · 19/08/2021 16:50

Captain Underpants is fun too. Very silly.

Go to your local library and see what is available. Also pay a visit to your local bookshop and see what is on sale etc. If you google picture books for older kids, you might be surprised at the results. Sometimes Amazon have some on sale, try that as well.

Doje · 20/08/2021 09:13

Have a look at The Phoenix Comic collections (available on Amazon)

DS loved those at 6 (and still now at 7) and would disappear into his room for hours to devour them.

We have a fair few of the ‘early reader’ type and lots of the level 5/6 read with Oxford books.

Winnie the Witch starts at level 4 read with Oxford IRC.

There’s 3 books about a girl called Tilly that my two like but each one is a different reading scheme. They like Tilly and the Dragon best.

AnUnlikelyCombination · 20/08/2021 09:17

Both my DC loved the Ahlberg Happy Families books so much I ended up buying them rather than just getting them from the library - fantastic illustrations, and just right for this age.

If black and white line drawings are enough, Mammoth Academy and the Worst Witch.

TheKeatingFive · 21/08/2021 20:43

Dogman

MrsPnut · 21/08/2021 20:46

The Bolds by Julian Clary, I recommend them to all parents of reluctant readers. Large print, lots of illustrations and jokes.
