Can anyone recommend any fun books my daughter could read herself. She's just finishing reception on green and I think she'd enjoy branching out from reading scheme books over the holidays.

She'd love a slightly longer read that she could put a bookmark in.

Claude the dog series by Alex Smith
Squishy McFluff
Rabbit and Bear
Meet The Twitches

How confident a reader is she - would it bother her if there are lots of words she can't read? If yes, then Rabbit and Bear, Claude and Squishy MacFluff would be too hard - they are right for my DS on purple.

My DD sounds similar in her reading level, she's just moved up to orange. The most successful real book we have at the moment is this books of Apple Tree stories amazon.co.uk/dp/1409562921/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_B3R17HFAAQTPFFZERV62]] . She also enjoys the Princess in Black books, there are still quite a few words she can't do though. She's also really enjoyed the Hey Jack books by Sally Rippin, you can get a box set of 20 pretty cheaply on eBay.

We have a set of the Rainbow Fairy Early Readers but she isn't enjoying those yet, the length is fine but the vocabulary is a bit too hard (lots of words like autumn). We've tried quite a few others with less success.

The other two longer books I can think of my DD has liked are the Usborne book of just so stories (Just So Stories for Little Children (Story Collections for Children) (Story Collections for Little Children) amazon.co.uk/dp/1474938051/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_NKS3ADZ1QZMARC1TBS2K)]] and an Usborne book of fairy tales from across the world (Stories from Around the World for Little Children (Usborne Picture Storybooks) (Picture Book Collection) smile.[[amazon.co.uk/dp/1409532747/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Y4ED6ZE58JKZGWW5WXP1). amazon.co.uk/dp/1409532747/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_Y4ED6ZE58JKZGWW5WXP1)]].]]

Otherwise, we've had various picture books and early readers out the library but they are all short and she reads them in a single sitting so wouldn't meet your criteria of a slightly longer read. Will be watching with interest to see if anyone has any further ideas!

Princess in Black is an excellent series. Very silly. Daughter also loved the Usborne Apple tree farm stories at that age.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/07/2021 16:22

Where's Spot books are good for that reading level too.

Hairy Maclary?

My DS LOVED the Edgar books (about a little raven) - they're quite dark but really sweet. He just shouts "Nevermore!" when he gets told to do anything, right until the end when he's been naughty all day and he asks his mum if she still loves him and she says...
"Evermore!"

Can you still get Puddle Lane books? I remember having those at that age. There’s a long page of the story for an adult to read, and then a simplified page facing for the child to read. I loved them.

The 13 Storey Treehouse series had all of mine in absolute stitches, my 9 year old still sneaks them away from the younger ones to read occasionally. Lots of fun pictures as well as the story to keep them entertained too.

MrsRussell · 26/07/2021 16:45

Oooh Spudlet you just reminded me of another one, Farmyard Tales with Poppy and Sam (and the little yellow duck on every page)

BergamotMouse · 29/07/2021 17:20

Thank you all. I have ordered the apple tree farm stories which I think she will like.

We've got a few us usbourne books from the library too which we will give a go.
