There are a lot of children in my extended family and over the past few years I have made it a tradition to buy them a book for each birthday. Now that some are getting a bit older it's getting trickier, particularly as a couple of them are not avid readers.

I'd love to hear your ideas, particularly for...

  1. A girl turning 11 who is not a big reader
  2. A boy turning 7 who is not a big reader

Thank you! :)

A magazine subscription? Aquila or The Phoenix?
Otherwise a reference work to dip into, according to their interests?

DS2 is 11 and not a big reader but he does like the graphic novel of The Iliad by Gareth Hinds.

DS didn't read much at that age but he would read anything Football related. There are several books like The Story of the World Cup by Richard Brassey, Jake Cake and the Football Beast by Michael Broad or 50 football skills by Usborne.

He might also like "This Cookbook is gross". 7yos are often hideous Grin

It depends too on what the 11 yo is into, if she has a hobby or interest she might like something related to that or how about Pie? It has the bonus of some recipes.

Try finding books that cater to their hobbies/interests.

Hard to recommend without knowing more about interests, but if the one turning 11 is heading to secondary school in September, then Go Big - The Secondary School Survival Guide might be a good fit. It’s funny, useful and reassuring.
