I can remember in the castle of adventure that there was a gypsy girl who was washed in carbolic soap by Jack and Lucy Ann's mother and given new clothes.
Blyton had a thing about gypsies- remember in one of the famous fives there was a boy they called sniffy because he was too common to blow his nose.

You must be joking Orinoco! No way - that's insane.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 21:07

God, don't you just ache for an Enid Blyton childhood?

dalek, just as a thought.

If you go on eBay, see if you can source some earlier editions with the dust jackets.

You can often pick up a 60s copy for £2 to £10 - and if they're well kept, they should be worth a bit of money later on. At least, they'll never be worth less.

I've got 14 at the moment. I haven't bought any for ages, but I think I'll start again in the new year. I think it's a nice legacy to leave a child.

bookofthedeadmum · 19/11/2007 21:14

I think Enid Blyton had a thing about mountains. The secret of Killamoon also had a mountain in it! The ones with the improbably named Rannu and Plescu (Prince Paul's bodyguards). I quite liked that book - I felt so sorry for the secret people inside the mountain .

I think 24Studio are selling the Secret series fairly cheaply.

I've just done the Enid Blyton quiz. I only got 23 out of 50 and there's me thinking I knew everything!

bookofthedeadmum · 19/11/2007 21:17

The FinderOuters is probably ok for 6-8 year olds. The secret seven, famous five and the 'Secret' series are really for slightly older children. I had nightmares from some of them but I did have a very active imagination.

20/50!!!!!!!

Mind some of those books I'm sure I haven't read. .

bookofthedeadmum · 19/11/2007 21:21

Pilscu? Something odd anyway.

Heated · 19/11/2007 21:23

The first ones I read were the Famous Five at about 6-7 years old. The EB stories I found most frightening were the Faraway Tree since you never knew whether was going to be nice or scarey and there was always the danger of being left behind once the world at the top of the tree moved on, whilst there was always security in the FF adventures that the bad guy would get outwitted by Julian and the daring George.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 21:24

Oh, dear. I only got 21 out of 50.

Mind you, I haven't read an Enid Blyton book for bloody years.

Heated · 19/11/2007 21:24

Bookofthedeadmum, is that the one where Jack is worshipped as a God, they eat lots of exotic fruit and they almost get sacrificed?

bookofthedeadmum · 19/11/2007 21:25

I always found Jack and Barney (different series) to be rather reassuring. Julian was a bit too mc for me.

Old set of Secret books on Ebay

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 21:31

Blimey, that's a bit sloppy. How are people supposed to bid when they don't know the publishing date?

Still, they look in good enough nick. If you can secure that lot for under a tenner you'll be laughing.

bookofthedeadmum · 19/11/2007 21:31

Heated, I don't remember that one. Sounds like EB was copying a bit of Lord of the Flies with that. Be interesting to see when each one was published.

The Ring o'Bells mystery gave me nightmares - the idea of bells ringing on their own and a submerged secret tunnel were enough to set my imagination roaming .

For a 5-7 year old I'd recommend the Faraway tree series and the Secret Seven - I used to read those when I was about 6. The Secret Seven is quite homely, they spend most of their time eating buns in the shed.
