DD loves Murder Most Unladylike & I’m trying to find similar series that’s not too gory or scary! She’s currently got the first Nancy Drew but isn’t too keen. She also loves Amelia Fang and Ottoline...any suggestions?

The Katherine Woodfine 'Clockwork Sparrow' series is excellent , perfect for her age. My two loved those ones. If you are after something slightly more old fashioned, I devoured all the Malcolm Saville series as a child.

BingBongToTheMoon · 31/05/2021 13:07

Aww I was going to suggest Nancy Drew/ The Hardy Boys (although they’re not really murder based).
Famous Five/ Secret Seven (although, again not murder based).

Lady Grace Mysteries? They are set in Tudor England and there are 12 books. I know the first one is about a murder but some of the others are different kids of crimes and mysteries as far as I can remember. I just checked and they are recommended for readers aged 8-14.

I have also seen the Scarlet and Ivy books recommended but I don't know much about them.

I was reading Ruth Rendall at that age but I guess he’s a bit too young for that.

newtb · 31/05/2021 13:19

I was reading Agatha Christie at that age. Depends on reading ability.

Came on to say the same!

Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Case Files are murder mysteries, if I remember rightly, so if she's after that she may prefer those. If you've got the recent publications of ND (written in first person) they're rubbish, so try and get older ones.

You could try the Roman Mysteries, if I remember rightly they're quite gory for the age they're aimed at!

Nightbear · 31/05/2021 14:06

Ditto on the Agatha Christie.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 31/05/2021 14:11

My daughter liked the Murder Most Unladylike books, she also liked Scarlett and Ivy books.

Smartiepants79 · 31/05/2021 14:13

Enola Holmes?

JoveWhenHeSawMyFannysFace · 31/05/2021 14:14

Came on to say Agatha Christie as well. Ngaio Marsh might be another one to consider in the more “classic” line.

For more modern stuff, anything in the “cozy mystery” section on Kindle might be OK. They’re generally a bit twee, but a 9 year old might not mind / notice that!

I read all the Agatha Christie books in our local library at that age Grin. Not sure that would be viewed as age suitable these days? Sherlock Holmes stories too. My mum gave me here Ruth Rendell and Lynda La Plante novels after she'd read them and told me to 'just shut your eyes if there's any rude bits'. Different times...

dannydyerismydad · 31/05/2021 14:29

The adventures on trains series is great.

The Highway Falcon Thief. Kidnap on the California Comet, Murder on the Safari Star.

newtb · 01/06/2021 02:24

Also the Lord Peter Wimsey by Dorothy L Sayers, bit dated but good stories.

timeisnotaline · 01/06/2021 02:31

Trixie Belden detective books

mouche202 · 07/07/2021 18:59

The Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence are great for that age.

hauxwell · 07/07/2021 19:10

Elly Griffith's has a kids murder mystery series called 'A Girl Called Justice'. Set in the 1930s, it's really good. I think there are three books so far. Similar to murder most unladylike etc.

NewallKnowall · 07/07/2021 19:32

The Clockwork Sparrow series and Taylor & Rose Series by Katherine Woodfine

The Violet Veil Mysteries by Sophie Cleverly

Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child

High Rose Mystery and Mic Drop by Sharna Jackson

The London Eye Mystery/Guggenheim Mystery by Siobham O'Dowd and Robin Stevens

The Trapdoor Mysteries by Abie Longstaffe

BlueChampagne · 07/07/2021 19:49

Second Roman Mysteries
Riddle of the Runes?

NewallKnowall · 07/07/2021 23:37

Oh, and similar to Ottoline and Amelia Fang..

Isadora Moon, Mirabelle etc by Harriet Muncaster

Squishy McFluff by Pip Jones (younger/simpler than the others) also younger but enjoyed here - Shifty Mcgifty by Tracey Courdery

Rainbow Grey also by Laura Ellen Anderson

Sibeal Pounder books like Bad Mermaids series, Witch Wars series, and Tinsel

BlueChampagne · 08/07/2021 17:44

If you want a good read for your child then have a look at ]]
Thank you.

Young Sherlock? Might be too old for a 9 year old? Series of books by Andrew Lane. My 10yo has been loving The Murder Most Unladylike series and has also been reading the whole of original Sherlock Holmes too, so could go straight to those!

Musication · 11/08/2021 14:25

Wading it to say almost 9 year old DD is currently devouring the Roman Mysteries. She's a big fan of mystery type stories and the added history here is definitely floating her boat!
