DS1 (5) loves picture books/ maps where he can spot or tick off sights - I'm keen to get him out and about more and wondered if there are any guides that people could recommend? He is borderline ASD and has loads of energy, so books of walks/ bike rides would be great, but really anything that concentrates his mind on looking for specific things is incredibly helpful.

His reading is average for his age but he just adores maps - we bought some old ones from a charity shop which he will go over and over (for no particular reason!) - so I'm hoping that books with big, bright and bold pictures as well as descriptions will encourage him to read too.

We're in the South East but anything UK wide would be fine, we can plan holidays round it if needs be.

Any suggestions gratefully received Smile

The Usborne Lift the Flap picture atlas is good. We’ve got two books by the National Trust: Look What I Found at the Seaside and Look What I Found in the Woods, and also I-Spy on a Car Journey. For bedtime, I’d suggest The Once Upon a Time Map Book

Thank you @Fivemoreminutes1 , that's really helpful. At the moment I'm buying DS1 old maps from the charity shop and letting him mark on them where he'd like to go, hopefully some real maps will spark his imagination!!

Those books all look lovely so thanks again Smile

This is a fabulous book - well worth the investment.

There are other activity books linked to it.
This is also great - hours of fun!

The old Ladbird ‘Understanding Maps’ might be one to buy too - not hard to find, and copies aren’t too expensive.

This link is good if you want to look at some pages of ‘Maps’ by Aleksandra Mizielinska - lots of comments too.

The Michelin I-spy books?

We used to have day trips to the airport viewing gallery to tick off the aeroplane one!

Another map mine loved was the London Children's Map by Guy Fox. Had all the major sights on it.

(When DD was 6 she got a compass and map case for Christmas. Still loves them now.)

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 06/06/2021 22:06

Thank you so much @mrssmiling, @PolkadotsAndMoonbeams and (again!) @Aroundtheworldin80moves. I think DS1 would love all your suggestions!!

My son (now 10) sounds very similar to your DS! He loved this book: www.bookdepository.com/Around-World-50-Ways-Lonely-Planet-Kids/9781786577559 Actually, anything published by Lonely Planet was a hit. He then moved onto this which is probably his favourite book of all time: www.bookdepository.com/Transit-Maps-World-Mark-Ovenden/9780141981444

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 08/06/2021 14:44

Thank you @bettythebutterfly, those look like lovely suggestions! DS1 is very visual, hence why I thought he'd love the maps. I've put an order in for some books already, think I'll be ordering more soon Smile
