Easy books or picture books for older children

My 10 year old enjoys reading but I've noticed that she tends to gravitate towards younger books (both for the content and the ease of reading - she struggles a bit with vocabulary and reading fluency).

She is quite artistic and enjoys heavily illustrated books. Wonder if anyone could recommend some picture books, illustrated books or just plain easy-to-read books for older children or tweens.

Invisible Emmie (and others in the Emmie and Friends series)
Dork Diaries
Cookie! series by Konnie Huq
The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks

My 10 year old likes the 10 storey treehouse series. There’s also some books in the Katie series by James Mayhew, like Katie’s Sunflowers, Katie and the Starry Night etc which feature works of art and famous artists.

Graphic novels.
Raina Telgemeier has written several but the trilogy of Smile, Sisters and Guts is brilliant.
Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson is another good one.
A lot of classic have graphic novel versions or modern interpretations. I read one that was loosely based on Little Women but a modern version.

There are so many highly illustrated chapter books - though some may be a bit too young for your DD. She could try the x Storey Treehouse series, Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, Tom Gates etc

Or try comics/graphic novels...

Absolutely love reading the Katie art books with my 7 year old. They are picture books, but with a much older appeal for a child interested in works of art.

For fans of the Katie books there is a fantastic book called Lulu and the Flying Babies by Posy Simmons. I think it's out of print these days but if you find a copy it's great.

Thank you so much for these great suggestions. I've looked them up and they are spot on (we have a few of these already and it's great to get more in the same vein).

DS2 is a bit like that. Asterix, Tintin and Terry Pratchett's Mort as a graphic novel have been big hits. He also loves The Phoenix comic.

Leeds2 · 14/05/2021 19:48

Wimpy Kid series. Tom Gates and Middle School series are similar. As is I Am A (Sort of) Loser.

That will be also great if you involve her in drama classes. It will help her to boost her skills.

Yika · 15/05/2021 22:05

More great suggestions, many thanks. Yes I would like to get her into a drama group this year and she is keen too.

Sneak in some history with The Phoenix's Corpse Talk graphic novels.

Yika · 17/05/2021 16:59

The Phoenix Corpse looks great, will get one and see. Looks like the kind of thing I might enjoy myself!

The Captain Underpants series although very American in content are very good fun. Both elder and younger DS love them.

Tintin and Asterix (I enjoyed these as a kid but I would say I have seen concerns online about some of the racial depictions in Tintin especially)

Wimpy Kid series has been battered too.

DC do quite a few more kid friendly comics (DC Super Hero Girls springs to mind). Just be aware that when DC say "mature content" they tend to mean it.

The graphic novel of The Iliad by Gareth Hinds?

Erinrose82 · 17/06/2021 10:40

My nine year old loves Tom gates. He's not struggling but lazy and just loves something funny.
I still think the Winnie the witch novels would work ! My 13 yr old daughter really really struggled and they worked... now she reads and listens to audiable xxx
