Were the "Dick and Jane" readers used in England?

OH remembers growing up in the 1960s in the Midlands and learning to read at school using the "Dick and Jane" books. I think those books were only used in North America and so he must be remembering it wrong.
Does anyone know?

@MissyB1 wide range readers ring a bell. They were incredibly boring. I started school being able to read. I think we started those in the Junior school. I was reading all sorts at home and really couldn't understand why I had to read these awful things at school! No such thing as 'free readers' in the 70's!!

I learnt with peter and jane. Very dull and also wildly sexist. Peter was always helping dad in the garden and jane helping mummy in the house.

Who remembers billy blue hat and roger red hat in the village with three corners?

I do Antiques!

Wasn’t there also a Jennifer Yellow Hat?

I seem to remember they weren’t quite as eye-gougingly boring as Peter and Jane.

Oh yes, I remember wide range readers. My mum (a teacher) used to call them “wild rage” because they were so dull they enraged her Grin
