Books for a 6 year old good reader

Voiceofreason92 · 23/02/2021 00:17

My son is a good reader, but we struggle to find books that are not too ‘old for him’
He has read all the Roald Dahls and all the treehouse books. Hates Diary of a wimpy kid series and I hate David Walliams!
i read him the first Harry Potter but it was too long for him and he lost interest.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Jeremy strong - lots of different ones try My Brothers Famous bottom series or the 100 mile an hour dog.

Maybe Alex Rider- or they might be a little grown up.

David Baddiel books are good too.

Have you tried the Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon? Others that are popular with able KS1 children have been the flat Stanley books, dick king-smith, Paddington stories, and the 13 storey treehouse series.

Porridgeoat · 23/02/2021 00:48

Horrible science, horrible geography, horrible history Romans/victorians and any of the other horrible type books. Guinness book of records

How to Train Your Dragon

Magic Faraway Tree

I've heard knights and bikes are good.

fridaseyebrows · 23/02/2021 00:55

My 6 year old reads Captain Underpants (if you can cope with toilet humour), The Tom Gates books, just started reading Secret Seven which he is loving.

fabulousspider · 23/02/2021 01:03

13 storey treehouse books are really good as PP suggested.

Mr Majeika (series). Faraway tree.

Tom Gates, my son loves these books!!

We’ve had success this lockdown with a box set of Jill Tomlinson, Owl who was afraid of dark, Otter who wanted to know etc. My little one (7) not quite ready for David Williams and disappointingly he doesn’t quite get Horrid Henry yet (although they are my absolutely favourite books to read out loud - primary school teacher and enormous fun with the voices!)

Owlpoorlypaw · 23/02/2021 01:17

Previous poster, I nearly added that I’ve seen lots of things in the Horrid Henry Books that make me wince now - and think they are only about 15 years old. I suppose should just take solace that the world has moved on.

Apileofballyhoo · 23/02/2021 01:18

He might like Flat Stanley. I remember reading the Famous Five at that age, also EB's Mystery of/Five Findouters series, and Paddington as a PP said. DS loved David Walliams, sorry! I also liked Grimms Fairy Tales and Asterix and TinTin.

LavendarMoon · 23/02/2021 01:21

The Knitbone Pepper series

toria658 · 23/02/2021 01:44

Gene Kemp, Turbulant Term of Tyke Tyler

Nameandgamechange123 · 23/02/2021 05:58

Beast quest?

MargaretThursday · 23/02/2021 10:12

One of mine loved the Little House Books at that age.

SnowyBranches · 23/02/2021 10:19

There does seem to be a gap in the market for good readers of this age. I have loads of thin chapter books from my childhood, mostly Puffins, aimed at exactly this age and stage but they would probably seem old fashioned now -Owl who was afraid of the dark, Olga Da Polga, The Castle of Yew, Magic in the Air, Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf, Secret Seven, Matthews’s Secret Surprises, - there doesn’t seem much now apart from the interminable Beast Quest or fairy books.

BlueChampagne · 23/02/2021 12:57

I reckon Olga da Polga and Clever Polly have stood the test of time!

Quornflakegirl · 23/02/2021 13:09

Fudge series by Judy Blume.

landofgiants · 23/02/2021 21:20

Dick King-Smith. Charlotte's Web. The Amulet series (graphic novels) is excellent for young independent readers but might be too scary at that age (I think it's scary, but DS doesn't!). My son is an avid reader but I don't remember him reading much fiction at that age, just factual books. No stopping him now, though.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 23/02/2021 21:32

My 6 year old is loving Famous five, Daisy & Pamela Butchard - Wigglesbottom Primary set and Baby Aliens.

Voiceofreason92 · 23/02/2021 21:46

Wow- thank you everyone. Theres loads to try here. We’ve read a few of these (Mr Majeika, Owl who was afraid of the dark, and the entire treehouse series- which nearly tipped me over the edge!) but theres so many here to try!
Thank you so much everyone.

The Dragonsitter’s Detective series

UnaOfStormhold · 09/03/2021 06:52

My Father's Dragon is lovely. Swallows and Amazons is popular at the moment. Our local library has been doing a service where thry select books for collection which has led us to find lots of new options -the Secret Explorers series among others.

Squiblet · 10/03/2021 16:49

Andy Stanton's Mr Gum books are very funny, loved by both my DS and DD at age 7-8 so he might be nearly ready for them
