Spy books dd12 female lead

Zebee · 05/02/2021 19:20

My previously reluctant reader has really got into reading and I really want to embrace this. She has really enjoyed reading spy type (perhaps detective but not too nursery) books but really wants the lead to be female which cuts down the options. Currently choosing to read for an hour a day which is great but means I need more book ideas.
Some previous successes
Ally Carter Gallagher series (read another by Ally Carter but less keen)
Murder most unladylike
Currently reading Shannon Greenland series
Favourite ever book (read twice) Undercover thief HT King

Any ideas welcome, thanks

Laura Marlin books by Lauren St John
Sally Lockhart books by Philip Pullman (can't remember when DD read those though so may need to check suitability for a 12 yo).

The ruby redfort series by lauren child would probably go down well if she hasn't already read them.

Zebee · 05/02/2021 19:35

Thanks The Ruby Redford books look exactly the kind of thing she would like. I think she would find the Philip Pullman a bit too dark. Lauren St John looks a little young but might be worth a try.

Nancy Drew books were good when I was a child but not sure if they are slightly young for her.

Enidblyton1 · 05/02/2021 19:40

My DD would recommend the High Rise Murder Mysteries (there are currently 2 books) by Sharna Jackson. Two female lead characters. I read them too and thought they were very well written.

Enidblyton1 · 05/02/2021 19:44

The Kat Wolfe series by Lauren St John is another my DD has enjoyed

idontlikediging · 05/02/2021 19:50

The Jane blond books are great and possibly the girl is murder but that one might be to old or the squad or the specialists I think some in that series might be from the point of view of boys though

WeeLamb · 05/02/2021 19:59

Definitely the high rise murder mysteries and also Agatha Oddly series. Both female protagonists and very readable.

Enidblyton1 · 05/02/2021 20:03

Ooh @WeeLamb I was wondering about Agatha Oddly for my DD next. Are they murder mysteries?

idontlikediging · 05/02/2021 20:06

I pressed post to soon it depends if she is a young 12 or not I think there are the Gail Carriger ( I had to copy and paste the name) books wich are steam punk and very good and if reading the Gallagher girls should be good and a girl named digit is also good but not a spy book but very similar and probably closer to how being might actually be and I like it when I was reading those sort of books ( if you can't tell I really liked reading) I know you said from the point of view of girls but there are some of the Ali sparks stuff is very adventurous with some the books like the shapeshifting series and frozen in time ( not a spy book but deles with government conspiracy kind of) is from the point of view of a girl I think or at least some of it is. the bodyguard is a good one the main character is a boy but there some very strong female characters in it I was reading a lot of the same at a similar age and older and liked all of these I

WeeLamb · 05/02/2021 20:32

@Enidblyton1 yes, my DD loves them. Strong female main character, set in London (mainly in tunnels!) and seems to involve solving complex mysteries to save the population from impending doom.

Zebee · 05/02/2021 20:33

Looking through the different books, some good ideas thank you. She has been such a reluctant reader for years that I am delighted that she is now reading but need to be able to keep up with some ideas.

She may also enjoy the Katherine Rundell books - rooftoppers, the good thieves, explorer - really gripping.

My dd had the same comments.

The latter half of the Cherub series (I think they may be marketed as Cherub series 2) follow James' younger sister, Lauren I think.

Nancy Drew as others have said. However she found the Nancy Drew terrible "and she looked beautiful in this and was amazing at this skill she'd never tried before but can pass as a professional after an hour's practice" which she didn't really get on with.
What about Miss Marple? Years since I read those, so not sure whether a 12yo would enjoy.
Not spy stories, but has she read the Dido Twite books by Joan Aiken?
The Roman Mysteries may be a bit young for her, but my girls loved them.
Not really spy detective ones, but I think they tended to be a mystery to solve, The Stage School series by (I think) Lyn Gardner, starts with "Olivia's First Term".
On a similar vein there's the Hollie Webb books has written a number that dd enjoyed, and I think she tends to have female main characters. The Rose series is about an alternative magic world, but I can't remember the other series.

But you are right, go to spies and it definitely is boy centred. I wrote a (small) series for dd, who enjoyed them (probably because I wrote them rather than them being any good) because she wanted a spy like her. That's rather time consuming though!

Murder Most Unladylike Series by Robin Stevens, really enjoyable books.

Scarby9 · 06/02/2021 01:12

I moved from Nancy Drew ( aged 10 -11ish) to Agatha Christie to James Bond. I LOVED James Bond books right through my teens but find them almost unreadable now.
