Which we both hate.

Are there ANY others for children? I see horrible histories has spawned a sort of franchise with board games etc.

Ouch crushed hand sounds nasty - poor you.

Have written Enid and Boudica on back page of my diary - will look in a few months time and wonder?

Not about history as such, but what about the Roman Mysteries series? Might be a little old for her (or not...

doddle · 24/10/2007 11:30

I've used these two with my class.

boudicca

francagoestohollywood · 24/10/2007 11:31

we like Usborne

EllHell · 24/10/2007 11:33

My dd is in Year 3 and loves the Roman Mysteries series (verging on obsession ).

The Dorling Kindersley books 'A Street Through Time' and 'A City Through Time' are also really interesting (though not specifically focused on Romans).

Sorry to hear about the hand. Hope you feel better soon.

TinyGang · 24/10/2007 11:37

Fishburne is fantastic at half term. We went this time last year when dd was doing Romans in yr 3

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 24/10/2007 11:39

The Book People had a few when DS1 did Romans. Usbourne ones I think.

EmsMum · 24/10/2007 11:48

We have some. the only one I can find now is Usborne one on pompeii, but there were a couple of others from this lot - can't remember now exactly what but DD liked them last year in Yr3

MegaLegs · 25/10/2007 15:58

Well Roman army day was fab if a bit chilly and damp.

I'm afraid the book shop was a bit lame. All the Usbourne stuff, a book about Julius Ceaser, one on Cleopatra but nothing on Boudica. A few brief mentions of her in "The Celts legends and heroes."

Sorry not to have been much help Enid's DD.

Horrible Historys and Horrible Author.

My friend wrote to him once saying she admired his books and that his school had enjoyed a visit from Henry VIIIth who had presented a Tudor one to her DS as a prize for something or other.
Back came a rant from Mr Deary railing against schools, teachers and education - apparently children don't learn anything after the age of 11 so shouldn't bother with school. He was equally as offensive about re-enactor type people such as the visitor to her DS school.
Rather surprised my friend mailed him back pointing out that his e-mail was rude - another equally offensive e-mail followed.

So - Horrible Historys - don't bother. Go for some of the other links suggested here.
Sorry for the hijack btw but was just flabbergasted when I saw his e-mail to my friend - a response to an e-mail of praise.

demonaid · 25/10/2007 16:19

Blimey! What is the name of the HH guy, whose books I shall certainly avoid now?

demonaid · 25/10/2007 16:20

Oops... Mr Deary, presumably...

In my addled hormonal state I'd previously read that as Dreary and assumed you were using it as an epithet.

Theclosetpagan · 25/10/2007 16:22

Did a bit of research into dear Mr Deary after seeing his mail to my friend. Apparently he is a bit of an eccentric known for his loathing of teachers/education.

Enid · 25/10/2007 17:10

well I hate his books anyway
