Books you hate reading aloud to your children

Was thinking tonight, as I trudged through a book I particularly dislike, how often my children reject my carefully chosen good books in favour of utter tripe. We're talking the Rainbow fairy books obviously, or history-obsessed DD2's current favourites, the turgidly written My Story series (though I suppose they are educational).
DD3 hits me with Topsy and Tim, Little Grey Rabbit and the unutterably tedious Animals of Farthing Wood.
What do you hate reading aloud?

Thomas the bleeding tank engine - thank goodness he's moved on from it! Y A W N

feetheart · 22/10/2007 22:41

Rainbow s*dding Fairies every time

boo64 · 22/10/2007 22:42

Wibbly effing Pig - it's so bloody stupid

feetheart · 22/10/2007 22:43

Nasty feeling we are just about to embark on Thomas with choo choo obsessed DS - he's nearly 2 and I have managed to avoid it so far

The original Thomas the Tank Engine. Someone kindly gave us the whole set. Thankfully ,they've outgrown them now but how I hated them!

brimfull · 22/10/2007 22:59

I'll second Thomas the Tank Engine.

I refuse to read them now. He's 5 now and still loves them but I leave them to dh and we keep them on a really high shelf.

Mr Men.

Tommy · 22/10/2007 23:06

agree with Thomas the Tank Engine - thank god mine didn't really like them that much anyway and are now a bit beyond them.

DS2 has one called The Elephant and the Bad Baby - which is repetitive but doesn't rhyme - and I just find it very dull!!

Give me a good Julia Donaldson any day

misspopov · 22/10/2007 23:15

Anything TV related DD2 has a favourite Tweenies one which is tedious to read, she also bought a Fifi one whilst out shopping with grandma last week and I have hidden it at the back of the bookshelf as I hate reading it. Luckily she is going through a Gruffalo phase at the moment and enjoys hearing any of her Julia Donaldson books which I love as well.

paddingtonbear1 · 22/10/2007 23:32

I don't actually mind Thomas the Tank. But I hate Spot!!! Where is Spot? In the bin, I wish. dh keeps changing bits and dd goes ' no daddy that's wrong'!

MrsWeasley · 22/10/2007 23:39

I hid all the Mr Men books
Cant bear reading Thomas books, but the worse by far(IMHO) is Dr Seuss (green eggs & Blardy ham)

JacOLantanne · 22/10/2007 23:40

I hate, loathe and despise the Mr Men books -they're so badly written, really clunky. I'm also very glad I have 2 girls because I don't think I could manage the Thomas ones either.

TotalChaos · 22/10/2007 23:49

In the Night Garden books.

I love Mr Men books.

I think they are extraordinarily entertaining

Only the old ones though. And not the Little Misses.

boo64 · 23/10/2007 09:26

War and Peace - tis a bit long....

mrsmerton · 23/10/2007 09:29

Anything Thomas The Tank. Don't understand all that talk of sidings, uncoupling Zzzzzz

Also hate Mr Men books, refuse to buy them.

Also hate Snail and The Whale, love The Gruffalo and Room on The Broom, but the whale one leaves me cold.

I do read to my kids, despite sounding like an old grump!

mrsmerton · 23/10/2007 09:29

Oh, I forgot, We're going on a sodding Bearhunt.

notnowbernard · 23/10/2007 09:32

Thomas

Winne-the-Pooh (the originals)

Can't you sleep Little Bear?

Sleeping Beauty

madamez · 23/10/2007 09:32

Some horrors my mum bought for DS: The Little Helicopter, The Little Fire Engine... Make no sense at all, atrociously written. I've managed to hide most of them. I was going to make DS dad read them, but he, er adapts the text (THe little police car saw Teddy on the street corner. Teddy's a pimp and a crack dealer...)

Othersideofthechannel · 23/10/2007 09:43

Some Mr Men books.

But I love doing Mr Noisy and booming and whispering. I think the moral story is quite good too.
