I’ve run out of ideas for what to read to DS at bedtime.

He likes pretty much anything but particularly enjoys space, myths and adventures.

My 8 year old has just really enjoyed listening to me read Malamander to him. I bought it on a recommendation from a friend and it was brilliant! We've also read the sequel, gargantis.

Currently reading Mrs Frisby and the rats of Nim which he is very much enjoying too.

Other favourites have been

Toto the Ninja Cat
Dick King-Smith animal stories
Dinosaur cove series

IrritableBitchSyndrome · 15/12/2020 21:52

The Little Lunch books are really funny.

RightOnTheEdge · 15/12/2020 23:00

I'm reading A Boy Called Christmas with my ds at the moment and he is really enjoying it and laughing at it.

He's also really liking Dick King Smith as well. He especially enjoyed Smasher and Ninnyhammer.
Tom Gates and Wigglesbottom Primary are other favourites.

My ds likes David Walliams books, some are better than others. We both recently enjoyed the Midnight Gang. He also loves Roald Dahl, narnia and Bear Grylls books.

He has all the horrid Henry and dertie Bertie books but they are easy for him to read independently. He also likes a series called pirate blunder beard.

nevergoingoutagain · 15/12/2020 23:11

Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Before that we had the borrowers

Imisscheese · 15/12/2020 23:15

The two christmasaurus books by Tom Fletcher at the moment. He loves them.

Unicant · 15/12/2020 23:15

Another Slice of Rainbow by Joan Aiken
The Magician who Kept a Pub by Dorothy Edwards

Both are wonderful collections of short stories with fairytale vibes but which are quite contemporary and sometimes slightly dark.

Also you could try things like 'Howls Moving Castle'

Unicant · 15/12/2020 23:19

Sorry I meant 'The Last Slice of Rainbow'

We bought the Treehouse series after millions of recommendations on here

So did I! They are awful books. I got halfway through the first one and couldn't continue. I put them aside until DC could read them on their own. Now DC can read them and has no interest in them at all.

AlwaysLatte · 15/12/2020 23:36

At that age my sons loved Mr Gum series, Dahl (sorry autocorrect doesn't like his first name!), the Accidental books, Pugs of the Frozen North, Horrible Histories, Horrible Science, Harry Potter (if he likes it why not read it anyway?) and some Anthony Horowitz books.

AlwaysLatte · 15/12/2020 23:39

DS2 (7) was obsessed with Beast Quest for a while. It's basically the same book 60 times.
Mine too! We have every single one (well up to about two years ago). They knew the format inside out but sometimes with young children that's the attraction.

Redwinestillfine · 15/12/2020 23:43

Magic treehouse, Nellie chic ice, bear Grylls, dinosaur cove....

ouchmyfeet · 16/12/2020 05:48

Have a look at Phillip Reeve's books, my two loved them. Particular favourites were Cakes in Space, Oliver and the Seawigs, and Jinks & o'hare's funfair repair

charlieclown · 16/12/2020 05:54

I’ll be honest. I was expecting more 😬

Thank you for the great suggestions.
They should keep us going for quite a while.

He’s mainly reading Asterix books at bedtime at the moment. His “school” reading (he keeps on forgetting to get a new school book) is Transformers.

I’ve bought him a Lucy Hawking book. I’ll probably give the Treehouse books a miss :)
