Exciting books for a beginning reader

DD is 4, is learning to read and is starting to be able to read simple stories herself (eg. Read with Oxford stage 2/3). I was thinking of getting her a book she could read for herself as a Christmas present, but most of the stories aimed at beginning readers don't seem that thrilling! Does anyone have any tips for exciting stories for a beginning reader?

My kids both really liked the Usborne Farmyard tales books. Each page has a top line in bigger text is for the child to read and the bottom few lines in smaller text are for the adult. The stories are much better than in a beginner reader because the adult words can add a lot more story. The DC seem to really like the idea of something that is supposed to be a joint effort. When the get better at reading, you can swap around who reads the adult / child words.

You can buy a hardback book with all 20 stories in amazon.co.uk/dp/1409562921/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_Xxt0Fb0NYKM9V]] or get them individually.

If your DD turns out to like it (or she's very into princesses as an alternative) Usborne also do a book of princess stories and a book of fairytales with adult / child words.

Thanks - will check them out. DD has some of the Usborne My First Reading Library set, which are based on a similar concept. She really enjoyed them, but was not impressed when she realised that at some point she was expected to read all the words herself...

@mentalblank yes we have those too, the stories are much better in the Farmyard tales - we got them as a present when DC1 was tiny and actually read them as stories for years before someone pointed out why they had two different size fonts!
