Hi

My dd is reading the "New Way" pink level parallel books at school. She has also read "Peter & Jane" to level 6 Ladybird Read it yourself Level 3 and some of the "Happy Venture" readers series.

She is keen to go and choose some books at the bookshop.

She did read some ORT up to level 6 from the library, but she is not keen on them

So I would welcome any ideas to point her in the right direction and also ideas for christmas presents.

thanks for your help.

The ladybird first readers are always good. Classic stories like the Enormous turnip etc are good because of the repitition in them, which gives them an opportunity to succeed at reading the text iukwim. Also the 'magic key' books, purely for the fab stories and characters they offer

rezmum · 20/10/2007 22:43

Hi

she has read early ladybird ones eg enormous turnip, town mouse country mouse, sleeping beauty, Sly fox red hen

She read some of the magic key but thought they were boring as the pictures were too big and not enough words. Think it was because she was use to the ladybird format

Oh ok...good on her though. I love it when children really get hooked with reading . I'll have a rethink and get back to you.

thelittleElf · 20/10/2007 23:14

I've just found this new series....may be worth a look

RosaTransylvania · 20/10/2007 23:25

I was just about to recommend the Little Funnies series when I saw ThelittleElf had got there first. DD3 loves them. May I also recommend these and these

and if you are doing a Book People order you must get this

rezmum · 20/10/2007 23:39

Gosh I am pain she has read the Little funnies already. I have bought the Pippi Longstocking book for christmas as well as a gift for others. I would have bought the Milly Molly Mandy but we have read that from the library although I have bought it for others.

Anymore thoughts?

She has read the Large family and enjoyed them. Are those readers more than one or two lines a page?

RosaTransylvania · 20/10/2007 23:48

Olivia very funny

and Naughty Little Sister of course [http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Naughty-Little-Sister/dp/1405202890/ref=sr_1_1/202-5126136-5156621?ie=UT F8&s=books&qid=1192920255&sr=1-1 essential reading]]

this is my pick of best new picture books this year fantastic stuff

and DD3 is getting this for Christmas beautifully written and lovely illustrations

RosaTransylvania · 20/10/2007 23:50

Not many lines per page but they are enormous fun. If you want something with more words may I recommend Allan Ahlbergs Happy families series

rezmum · 21/10/2007 00:03

she has read My naughty little sister. The Happy families series is more like what I was looking for rather than picture books but we did get "mrs Vole the Vet" out the library but I didn't like the fact that it was about her children getting her a boyfriend, just felt it wasn't suitable for a 4yr old (maybe I'm a bit prudish)are the others different?

blimey rezmum.

Well here's what my good-reader DD likes (she's 6.5 btw):
Rainbow Magic (widely hated but there you go, not by DD)
Enid Blyton Magic Faraway Tree
Roald Dahl
Magic Pony series
as well as Milly Molly Mandy and NAughty Little Sister.

RosaTransylvania · 21/10/2007 00:10

Yes they all have a wacky sense of humour but not all about mums with boyfriends.
DD3 is very into the Banana books which you probably also have in your local library. As far as books she can read herself goes it might be worth just going with the library for the moment, because in no time at all she will be able to read chapter books and then you can start buying her all those dreary fairy and unicorn and pony books for a couple of years (DD2 is seven and has just come out of the end of this stage).

RosaTransylvania · 21/10/2007 00:15

Clary - looks like we are thinking along the same lines here! Rezmum - on no account buy your DD any of those bloody fairy books until she can read them buy herself, reading them out loud is more than flesh and blood can stand.

Clary · 21/10/2007 00:23

Lol rosa, I am no allowed to read the rainbow books and indeed hardly ever have them read to me (I am not worthy).

(Believe me tho, if you had a reader as unwilling as my DS1 (DD's older brother) you would be ecstatic about them reading the Boden catalogue or Hello!)

Hulababy · 31/03/2008 12:23

Has she tried Poppy and Max? They are about ORT level 6 level I think. Not particularly challening but nice gentle books, and good for confidence.

rezmum - your DD's school seem to use several of the old traditional schemes like DD's school.

rezmum · 31/03/2008 12:52

Hi Hulababy

Yes she's read them. Just been working her way through Dr Seuss; Solos;I can Read series; some Horrid Henry and the Roaring great reads series. Just about to read Amber's dressing up dreams and Sprinters.

she has just started to read non-fiction and is enjoying Dk readers and Usbourne beginners.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 31/03/2008 13:38

Yes, DD has those books too - not heard of teh Roaring ones though.

Have you looked at the Blue Bananas - colour changes as they go up in difficulty.

Also First Young Puffin and Colour Young Puffin, and Corgi Pups.

There is then things like Sprinters.

Hulababy · 31/03/2008 13:44

If she enjoys non-fiction also look at the Kingfisher I Wonder Why books, and Bubblefacts.

DD has a lot of these and enjoys to read them to daddy. They then talk about the stuff in them together.

At the moment DD is reading her dictionary, lol! She was writing a story but has got distracted.

rezmum · 31/03/2008 18:21

yes she's reading some red bananas from the library at the moment. We're waiting for some sprinters from Richard and Judy book club. What are bubblefacts?

OP posts:
Hulababy · 31/03/2008 18:29

They are by Miles Kelly Publishing and are non fiction books, small paperbacks. DD has Victorian Times, Kings and Queens, and Knights and Castles. There are others such as Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Dinosaur World, Human Body, Amazng Birds, Science World, Pirates, Amazing Mammals, Great Inventions, Planet Earth, Vikings, Wild Weather, World Wonders, Buds, oceans, and more.

DD likes the Banana range of books - can't remember all the colours. We have a mix of different levelled ones.

tigermeow · 31/03/2008 20:35

My DD loves the Rainbow Fairy books. She is reading them at a rate of 1 every 2 or 3 days. They are easy to read, good pictures, easy text and 'very exciting' as DD says!
Also try the Magic Tree House books- a little harder than Rainbow Fairies.
DD also loves DK EyeWonder non fiction books...in fact she'll read any animal non fiction book.

BTW- at 4 she sounds like a fantastic reader! Is she at school yet? What do her teachers say...or have they put her on ORT? DD has been bringing home level 5 ORT but they are very easy- she likes them though which is the main thing.

rezmum · 01/04/2008 10:51

hi tigermeow

yes my dd is in reception. They don't do ort at school. Her teachers think she's good at reading, she is probably leading the romp through the reading schemes but there are quiet a few very close behind.
