...ds is reading Michael Morpurgo at the moment (working his way through them) - he reads very fluently and I want him to keep on reading chapter books for pleasure, so what can people suggest that I encourage him with ?

For future reference, Stephen King wrote a book pitched at his 13 year old daughter's reading age when she was 13. It is called The Eyes Of The Dragon, and is a wonderful read - I read it recently and it is really gripping.. Some sexual references, but quite veiled.

Have been telling ds about all these books - will have a good browse this half term

mankyscotslass · 21/10/2007 12:33

Or the Alan Garner books...think there is a series, something like "The moon of Gomrath" or Elidor?

ArmadilloDaMan · 21/10/2007 12:48

What about Pratchett's childrens books?

The Carpet People
The Amazing MAurice and his Educated Rodents
The Tiffany Aching series (Wintersmith, A Hat full of SKy, The Wee free men)
The JOnny Maxwell series (Jonny and the Dead, Jonny and the Bomb, Only you can save mankind
The nomes trilogy (Truckers, Diggers, Wings)

I started on them about his age (well not Aching or amazing maurice cos they weren't out then) and loved them. I was an advanced reader and found them interesting and funny.

ok, today we made a start and bought a book called 'Breathe' A Ghost story by Cliff McNish -not heard of him before -but it seemed seasonal, and Michael Morpurgo's The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips - was toying with Artemis Fowl but ds seemed a bit bemused by the selection - he is dreadful at taking out and be asked to choose things -books, clothes, toys - not very forthcoming about saying he actually wants anything...so I feel that I've chosen for him. Anyway, will get him started on Breathe.

Ds (8 but fluent and voracious) has loved Molesworth - Folio Soc have a complete edition with all of Searle's fabulous drawings in new out, worth joining for IMO - and has also loved Willard Price and Artemis Fowl recently.
Lovely Scottish book, Dragonfire, by Anne Forbes - if you have visited and loved Edinburgh he'll adore it Mary
Not sure if this is too young or not but ds is currently captivated by Grk (Joshua Doder).
Dh and I have our battered old copies of Rosemary Sutcliff, Paul Berna, Lucy M Boston and Cynthia Harnett on standby (also C Walter Hodges' The Namesake).

Dd is currently (well, not right now at nearly midnight, but this week!) PHSL at Philip Pullman 'The Scarecrow and his Servant'.

MarsLady · 23/10/2007 23:46

Anthony Horowitz has the fourth Alex Rider book out if it hasn't already been mentioned!

Magdelanian · 24/10/2007 00:02

Have DD so hope it applies. Robert Muchmare? Sorry not sure of spelling. The Cherub Series. Also as the last post says Philip Pullman. All quite advanced as DD is 13 and still loves it. Hope this helps.

The Woolpack indeed - and Brother Dustyfeet & co!
I guarantee you will spend a lot of time up on Arthur's Seat trying to find that distillery pipe after reading Dragonfire, absolutely enchanting

Ds loved it
Oh, and if you are doing offbeat retro, how about Eric Linklater's The Pirates in the Deep Green Sea and The Wind on the Moon. Both wonderful reads!

BroccoliSpears · 30/10/2007 13:56
