Do you keep your DC’s old books?

I’m having a clear out of books that DS no longer reads. I want to give them away bar a few memories but DH says we should keep them all in the loft.

What do other people do? My parents never kept anything, which I suppose is a bit sad.

I keep the good ones, yes. My mum threw all mine away and I was gutted.

Keep, keep, keep! My mam kept mine and I am so happy she did. It is just lovely being able to hand them to my children.

We're keeping some, not all. Right now my kids have a set of books that were mine when I was their age, I was so happy when I found my mum had kept them. Maybe one day they'll have their own kids too pass them on to.

Angel2702 · 17/11/2020 14:31

Mine have hundreds so not going to be able to keep them all. I have al let special ones from my childhood so are keeping as many as we can.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/11/2020 14:36

I have kept the ones they loved the most and the ones I loved the most. But no, good lord they had hundreds of books (now teenagers, one is still an avid reader at 14).

Luckily they had a very generous Grandma who bought them huge amounts of books. A wonderful gift.

ApplestheHare · 17/11/2020 14:38

I'd keep the special ones. My mum and dad kept all mine and my sister's books and toys in their attic and by the time we got them out again most of them had lost the memories attached to them plus gone all musty so we ended up throwing most away anyway.

My mum gave away all our baby/picture books to younger cousins but I’ve got all my children/teen books in the loft and looking forward to passing them on to my kids. I’m going to keep most of their books for the same reason. Will probably donate the crap ones to charity though.

Select special ones to keep, pass others on.

SpillingTheTea · 17/11/2020 15:56

If you can't keep them all I'd donate. My Waitrose's are collecting for the local hospital fir Christmas on the children's ward. Not sure if other Waitrose's are also doing this.

WhatHaveIFound · 17/11/2020 16:00

We kept everything at the time (hundreds of books) but during a clear out more recently the DC (now 18 & 15) went through them and picked the ones they wanted to keep. Everything else was donated.

MinnieMountain · 17/11/2020 17:52

I think we’re going to have to just keep the special ones. I love buying DS books but we’re going to need more bookcases at this rate and he’s only 7.

My Dc have my old books, and some of their grandparents old books as well as their own.

Some picture books are boxed up in the loft now, but the rest are squeezed onto the bookshelves.
I won't be getting rid of any of them.

It's a bit silly to get rid of them just to buy more books for the next generation, if you have the space to store them.

My ‘kids’ are now in their 30s. I carefully stored all their favourite books that were in good condition in the attic, along with special toys like duplo , Lego and brio, and wooden puzzles. They are now in my youngest’s former bedroom, ready for when his little girl is old enough to enjoy them. So many happy memories of reading the books and seeing them play with the toys. Lots of still popular titles like Peepbo, Spot and Thomas the Tank Engine. I have just bought some board books for my granddaughter for Christmas, but not the ones we already have. They can never have too many books!

TwigTheWonderKid · 12/12/2020 21:39

I keep our favourites. What I really wish I'd done is keep an "Every Book I've Ever Read" book with a photo of each front cover and a brief description but it's too late now.

BurtonHouse · 14/12/2020 22:26

My toddler grandchildren are now enjoying books their parents loved as children. As they get older we will have the fun of rummaging in more boxes in the loft and rediscovering beloved old treasures.

My DD is currently reading some of my 80s Topsy and Tim, Cubby Bears and King Rollo books. Keep them!
