Age appropriate longer books for 5 year old fluent reader

Hi there,

I have a five year old who is a mostly fluent reader who has just started reading independently as a hobby which I am very keen to support. I’m looking for relatively long books but which have an age-appropriate plot and would be very grateful for suggestions! TIA.

The Claude series is lovely for a readIng 5yo

Daisy and the trouble with..... Don't let the fact the main character is female put you off ds loved these.
Flat Stanley my reluctant reader son couldn't put these down.
The simple Roald Dahl books eg Esio trot.
Captain underpants.

Shorter versions of the classics - maybe he was slightly older but Gillian Cross Version of the Iliad and Odyssey my older DS read about 50 times!
Horrible history books - my older Ds was obsessed with these
Both my DS loved Asterix from about 5 though heaven knows what they took from the puns!
I gave my older ds Harry Potter at the end of reception and although he read it to himself fine, I felt like emotionally it tuned much more aged 7ish, all that stuff about schools, friendships, the jokes were better suited to a bit older.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have bought quite a few from the suggestions as stocking fillers. He’s now read most of the Captain Underpants box set too and really enjoying them! It is definitely tricky finding books that are age appropriate but longer length and with more plot.
