Hi there,

I'm a bit stuck for ideas. I'm looking for story tapes/audio books for my boys aged 6 and 8. They should not be too long (i.e. not stretch over several CDs/cassettes) and not the Horrid Henry type stuff, I'd prefer a slightly higher quality .
I'm struggling to find something that's not too babyish (not stuff like Thomas the Tank Engine) but on the other hand not too complicated and advanced, as English is not their first language (they attend an English school though).

I think they'd also enjoy a fairy tale once in a while, but some are made up in a very girly pink way (why is this btw.) which they don't like, even if the actual tale is suitable for both genders (I'd have thought they all are). But which editions are good, read well/not too girly?

And what else would they possibly like?

Any suggestions and where to get tapes/CDs very welcome (apart from library, but even when I go there I can never decide which ones are suitable).
Many thanks.

Roald Dahl is good and there's a great offer at the book people

How to train your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Read by David (pant pant)Tennant. Trust me it's absolutely brilliant. Funny, good story - got everything!

Also Little Darlings, by Sam Llwellyn. I can't remember who's reading it abd we've now lost it, but it's another really funny one.

Harry Potter - the first one is OK for this age group and Stephen Fry reads brilliantly.

Anything produced by Barefoot Books - traditional stories very well rewritten and read. And good for boys because not girly and pink either in presentation or content.

The Just Wiliam books read by Martin Jarvis.
Great for long car journeys as is a delight for parents as well.

The best story tape i ever heard is Derek Jacobi's reading of JRR Tolkein's Roverandum. It is a dream. The story is perfect, and Derek Jacobi was born to read it aloud.

We got it in a charity shop, so not sure how available it is.

Stephen Fry reading Paddington Bear? My DCs love the Dahl books read brilliantly by a variety of 'lovies' (eg: Simon Callow doing The Twits, Miriam Margolyes doing Matilda) and also things like Tales from The Greek Legends by a company called Naxos (they do a whole range of classic stories for kids and are a good alternative to fairy tales)?
