DD (8) has almost read all JW'S books -including ones for older readers.

Any suggestions of similar 'realistic/street wise' type authors?

thanks

my dd is reading one about a mum who is about to explode, hang on I'll check...

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 16:34

jeremy strong is the author, quite a good book i think.

seeker · 10/10/2007 16:42

Hilary McKay
Karen McCombie
Judy Blume
Cathy Cassidy
Paula Danziger

these are amony dd's favourites, but she'11, so you might want to censor a bit first. Mind you, there were JW's that I wouldn't let her read, so maybe your dd's made of tougher stuff than mine!

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 16:45

and judy blume can be a bit sexual, think that particular book is called forever, my friend had a copy and we passed it around when we were twleve

seeker · 10/10/2007 16:56

I don't mind a bit of sex - it was the very dark themes in some of Jaqueline Wilson that worried me - I didn't care for Midnight, in particular for younger children.

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 16:57

sex at eight though?

MaryAnnSingletomb · 10/10/2007 16:59

we like Jeremy Strong too

seeker · 10/10/2007 17:00

I agree - that's why I said they might need to be censored. I am ridiculously old fashioned about my children's reading! But the OP has already said that her dd has read the older JW's, so she'll have come across the domestic violence, the alcoholism and the incest........!

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 17:00

sorry seeker just saw your dd was 11

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 17:01

really? my goodness am glad my dd's still like the fairy and pony books, phew.

seeker · 10/10/2007 17:03

And she still hasn't read all the JW books! She loves pony books too - ploughing her way through the Pullein-Thompson books from my childhood!

Quadrophenia · 10/10/2007 17:06

I live about four doors down from our local library, very handy for my twins who have just started reading these sorts of books.

pointydog · 10/10/2007 17:17

Hilary McKay

Gwyneth Rees's books for older children are pretty good, and dd likes them as much as JW. They are called things like The Mum Detective- they follow on from each other but are fairly self-contained. They are not strictly street-wise though....

unicorn · 10/10/2007 21:05

cheers all, will point her in the general direction of some of these.
