DD’s 10th birthday wishlist

Dd has asked for “books like Harry Potter and the Wizard of Earthsea” for her birthday. She’s read the Dark Materials series and also the Book of Dust, all the HP books and the first two in the Earthsea series (book 3 is a bit tedious). Does anyone familiar with books for this age group have any recommendations for what I could get her for her birthday?

My nephew loves the Chris Colfer land of stories series

Or if you want vampires and the like the Darren Shan series is quite good.

Also Terry pratchett and no one is never too young for Tolkien, would start with The Hobbit though!

JaJaDingDong · 29/09/2020 03:21

Has she read the City of Ember books?

Oohparcel · 29/09/2020 03:51

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow or some of Eva Ibbotson’s books?

Fivemoreminutes1 · 29/09/2020 04:42

The Uncommoners
Frostheart
The School for Good and Evil

DownThePlath · 29/09/2020 05:17

Percy Jackson?

BlueChampagne · 29/09/2020 13:11

The Dark is Rising series should be up her street. Or some Alan Garner?

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 29/09/2020 13:25

Cloud horse chronicles?

pollyhemlock · 29/09/2020 13:32

The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix is very good. Start with Sabriel. If she likes ghostly stuff the Lockwood and Co series by Jonathan Stroud is excellent. Almost anything by the great Diana Wynne Jones.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/09/2020 13:40

Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines series perhaps?

nonicknameseemsavailable · 29/09/2020 13:44

Rumblestar, then a Jungledrop (just published) by Abi Elphinstone, or Sky Song.
The Girl Who Speaks Bear by Sophie Anderson
A Girl called Owl, Snowglobe by Amy Wilson

Katherine Rundell is an excellent writer - The Explorer, Rooftoppers

Jess Butterworth - Swimming Against the Storm, Running on the aloof of the World

The Land of Roar (book 2 has just been published)

I'd check them out on line so you know what you want when you're in Waterstones.

Any independent book shops near you?

doodlejump1980 · 05/10/2020 17:06

If she’s into Harry Potter and has seen The Cursed Child, there’s a fabulous behind the scenes book explaining how the made the sets and costumes and stuff. It’s really fascinating.

Already recommended on here which mine (who has similar taste) loved are the School for Good & Evil series, and Cogheart.
Not previously recommended but she raves about are: Emma Carroll (all) / clockwork sparrow / Michelle Harrison (any) and a HUgE recommendation for the completely wonderful Mysterious Benedict Society books.

KeithLeMonde · 07/10/2020 08:03

Forgot how to train your dragon series by Cressida Cowell much better than the animated films and tv series
