Ok recently she has loved

Arabel's Raven
Gobbolino
Anholt Silly Stories anthology
Clarice Bean picture books

She loves animals but am loathe to get into reading Animal Ark - if only for my own sanity.

Any ideas?

Slinky Malinki

To read herself or for you to read to her?

For bedtime stories for me to read to her, my DD has enjoyed:

The Worst Witch
My Naughty Little Sister
Charlotte's Web
The Magic Finger
James and the Giant Peach
The Magic Faraway Tree stories

DD3 is currently working her way through the library's entire stock of Banana Books - they are colour coded Green, Red, Blue, Yellow in increasing levels of difficulty(possibly not in that order). Most of them are written by 'proper' children's authors (Jamila Gavin, Michael Morpurgo etc) and I do recommend them.
Also Sally Gardner's Magic Children series.
Lots of Dick King Smith for this age group too - start with the Sophie stories maybe.

Hulababy · 09/10/2007 17:50

For reading to self - yes, we also have the Banana books, just discovered them. DD also likes all the early reader ones that you can buy from M&S (fairy stories, etc), Ladybird books, ORT at Home, whole range of stuff.

Sorry went to get supper for kids.

Looking for stuff to read to her - she has just started reception so not reading at this level at all.

Have done all the books on your list Hula (she has an older brother so she has always been quite advanced in her tastes!)

Not heard of the Magic Children, but have read Sophie stories - she does like them.

I'll have a think. Also Flat Stanley. Read those ages ago, apart from Worst Witch which we have just rediscovered via my sister! Don't get to do many bedtime stories at the moment as DD (in Y1 now but April birthday) is enjoying her new found reading abaility, so we have to share suitable books there instead.

puddle · 09/10/2007 19:06

Hula I can recommend these - my dd and ds (who is year 3) both love them

We have read Flat Stanley too!

Some of the other Lauren Child books are good - The Storybook Wolves etc. She's also just illustrated Pippi Longstocking.

The Eloise books are fun, in a vintage Clarice Bean sort of way.

SSSandy2 · 09/10/2007 19:44

Mine loved the Little House on the Prarie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. There are I think 8 altogether or even more. I actually quite enjoyed reading those to her myself!

SSSandy2 · 09/10/2007 19:45

She also loved the Wind in the Willows but no doubt you've read that already and detective stories like Nancy Drew or Jigsaw Jones (didn't enjoy reading those so much myself).

puddle · 09/10/2007 19:47

Wind in the willows hasn't gone down well here. Too slow, "too much about the river" said ds.

Little house on the praerie though! Forgot I meant to get the first one for ds...will add to Amazon order. I think may be too old for dd.

I would look on The Book People. I have just receive an order from them - it included a set of 20 sprinter books from various authors which are aimed at infants I would say - either for you to read now, or for her to read herself in a year or two - these are for 6yo DS who is in Y2. And only £15 for a set of 20 books. Also I got a set of various Lauren Child books which I bought for my 3yo DD.

puddle · 10/10/2007 10:24

Thanks Bozza will have a look.

DD currently into Roald Dahl and loves the Babar the Elephant books that were DHs as a child.

Avoid s*dding Rainbow Fairies like the plague unless you want to be a gibbering wreck come bedtime

hatwoman · 18/10/2007 13:20

you are quite right to step away from Animal Ark. urrrggghhh. Pippi Longstocking is great. When I was a kid I loved Little Grey Rabbit - but I have no idea what age it's for nor whether it's anthropomorphic rubbish. If she really likes animals I'd get her into looking at factual stuff. DK do some lovely illsutrated encyclopedia type books which dd really likes

hatwoman · 18/10/2007 13:21

agree with Puddle on Wind in the Willows - we got it out the other night and it's quite a drag. maybe in a couple more years.

Bramshott · 18/10/2007 13:38

We have a Lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe that DD1 loves, also The Enormous Crocodile. Although as my DD1 is the eldest, I fear we are still quite stuck in picture book land!!

Bramshott · 18/10/2007 13:38

Sorry, meant to say a special abridged picture book version of TLATWATW
