Victorian or 1930's book

I want to get a book for my daughter. She is 10 and a reluctant reader. She is interested in the Victorian era as well as the 1930's.

Can anyone recommend a good book? She's watched Hattie feather so won't be interested in the book.

Thanks.

One of my favourites when I was her age was Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer. A Little Princess by frances Hodgson Burnett would fit the bill though.

There are also some easy-read nonfiction books about lives of children in specific time periods which she might enjoy, if you can get in touch with your local library they’d be happy to help.

I would disagree. As Laura gets older the books get more complex so read Little House in the Big Woods first.

Big Woods is OK, yes, but On The Prairie some sections a child might find boring. Some won’t like the how to build a house sections. Whole chapter in making a door and putting a latch on. I loved it all, personally, but I definitely found the new characters introduced at school in Plum Creek and the adventures in that one more interesting.

Charlotte’s Web would be good. Is that ‘30s or maybe ‘50s?

I would also suggest some of Jacqueline Wilson's other historical stories. Clover Moon and Rose Rivers are set in Victorian times I think. I just got one from the library for my rather reluctant 10 year called Dancing the Charleston set in the 1920s.

The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge, bit of fantasy but set in a Victorian period. There's a not very good film as well. Loved that book when I was a child, the lead character has the most amazing bedroom that I was very jealous of!

Another vote for the Little White Horse, I must have read that book a hundred times when I was a child!

Charlotte Sometimes would be good.
Anne of Green Gables, probably best to read to her.
Little house in the big Woods or Plum Creek, but the violence and religion may need explaining.

Hetty Feather the TV series is actually very different to the books - they completely changed the storylines (I love both the books and the telly version). She might enjoy them but maybe start with Jacqueline Wilson's The Lottie Project with is one of her earlier ones and is a good beginners book.
ShakeaHettyFeather what violence and religion that needs explaining are you talking about in the Little House series?
If she is a reluctant reader she might find Little House quite hard. I didn't read them until I was 12.
This thread is good because I love children's books and I too am trying to find books set in those era's. The irony is I seem to have read most of what has been suggested Grin
