My dd has just clicked with reading chapter books over this time in lockdown and has been ripping through the Sophie’s Adventures books by Dick King Smith. She’s quite sensitive and likes animal stories - she has Holly Webb and Animal magic books at bedtime but really likes following the girl character in the Sophie books. I’m not quite sure how we’re going to follow them!

Does anyone know of anything else like them?

Thanks

I just ordered a Daisy book for
My reluctant reader based on these recommendations!

I’d second Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf - lovely book, my 9yo has read the copy she’s had since she’s was 4 so much that it’s falling apart.

Grin@ “what’s a stickleback?”

Dd really likes the look of the Daisy books so that’s a definite I also think she’d like the Ramona series, Polly and a few others look great for a bit further down the line. We have got Charlotte’s Web which I was going to read with her as thought it might be a bit tricky - as well as sad - she is used to me crying at the sad parts in books and it tends to have the effect of making her laugh at me and neutralising it.

I’ve just seen that Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf is by Catherine Storr who wrote the wonderfully weird Marianne Dreams.

I've just had another couple of ideas:

Dick King-Smith books like The Sheep-Pig (Babe) and the Hodgeheg.

The Rabbit and Bear books by Julian Gough and Jim Field.

The Pony Mad Princess series and Humphrey the Hamster.

These are great - also just thought that dd enjoyed the Polly and the Puffin books written by Jenny Colgan if that helps anyone else.

They are quite short with not very much text but lovely illustrations and have recipes in the back which she had a go at reading before she could read the rest of the book - cake is a great incentive!

Judy Moody, Marge in Charge. Julia Donaldson paperback series of Princess Mirror Belle. Judy Blume books eg freckles.
Monstrous Maude is by the same author as Wimpy Kid but much easier to read and less disjointed. Rainbow Fairy series.
