Recommendation for 8 year old

Can anyone recommend any good books for 8 year old (nearly 9)? She loves the David Walliams books, except demon dentist as she thought it might be scary, she's also read most of the roald Dahl books but isn't as keen. She's given Harry Potter a go but said she didn't like it and doesn't like things that are written in the first person, but loves to read and I'm running out of ideas for her!

Mine has enjoyed Mallory Towers since watching it on CBBC.
Best Friends’ Bakery
Pippi Longstocking
Worst Witch
Alice Miranda
The Royal Babysitters
Animal Ark
Tanglewood Animal Park
The White Giraffe series
The Girl with the Lost Smile (not a series, but brilliant)

Wizards of Once series by Cressida Cowell is a bit lighter than Harry Potter, lots of illustrations as well.

David Baddiel has written some quite funny ones set in the real world if that’s what she enjoys about Walliams, my ds hasn’t been keen on all of them but enjoyed The Person Controller and The Parent Agency.

Land of Roar by Jenny McLachlan

The Treehouse books are good fun.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/07/2020 20:34

Michael Morpurgo books are good if she's an animal lover.

Wizard of Once

Funny books

Anything by David Baddiel he's written 6 or 7 standalone books and DD loved them.
Diary of a wimpy kid

Adventure
Artemis Fowl - we've not read these yet but I bought them after watching the Movie on Disney plus

Factual
Horrible histories and horrible science have both been very successful.
I wouldn't recommend famous five they haven't dated well and are almost unrelatable to a modern day child bought up in our technology era. Much to my disappointment when I bought the box set for Dd.

Rodent01 · 13/07/2020 20:56

Why should the famous five be updated for the modern era?! Surely that’s all part of the learning about children’s lives books written 80 odd years ago?!

I’ve started on St Clares etc with DD and just explain the bits that she might not comprehend - what an eiderdown is, why they are lighting fires and cooking toast inside on them!!!

SatsukiKusakabe · 13/07/2020 21:07

I disagree about the Famous Five as well, my ds is as into tech as any kid but still enjoyed them. He liked the mystery and adventure element, and the picnic and sleepover element, and we had lots of discussions about differences etc and laughed at the boring chapter titles “Something Happens” etc

Gracsee · 14/07/2020 23:13

The babysitters club. They are graphic novels as well if she prefers them.
Tom Gates is good too.

Ploughingthrough · 15/07/2020 03:52

My almost 8 year old is going through a massive Enid Blyton phase: she's read most of Famous 5, all of Malory Towers and is half way through St. Clare's. To add to the Famous 5 discussion, DD loves them even though they are dated - she loves the mystery and adventure and picnics, and is totally able to understand that they were written a long while ago and things are a bit different now!
I have just bought her the Ramona Quimby series which I'm hoping she will enjoy, and also considering the babysitters club as I remember enjoying those.

A couple of new books for her to try are the recent ones by V.P. Girling . The first is "Ollie Meadows and the Defiants" and the second is "Ollie Meadows and the DreamSpinners". with more due out soon. They have questions and a map and are great fun-even I enjoyed reading them!

SnowWhite300 · 16/09/2020 23:10

Try Raggedy Man Tales by GM Jordan. My boys loved the book and they stories are aimed at girls and boys. Check out the Viking girl story, my friends daughter decided that after reading that she wanted to be a Viking and my eldest decided he wants to marry one. Old fashioned story telling and magical (I wanted a tattoo of one of the characters in the London story but my ex talked me out of it!)
