I think my 9 year old would like these books, she quite likes darker things at the minute (and I’d do anything to stop her reading David Walliams).
I vaguely remember a year 5 class having this as their class book so she’s about the right age I think but not sure!
Anything else like these books she might also like while I’m here?

Well, my 11yo has been reading them for about three years... however, he did casually drop into conversation when he was nine that they were all about the chthulu mythos! There's a lot of deaths in them, but a lot of humour too. Depends on your child I think.
He won't watch Dr Who as it's "too scary", but reads these fine. Confused

Other similar books:
Artemis Fowl
Alex Rider
Mortal Engines
Jacksi Person (what we call Percy Jackson in our house!)

She might also like A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Fab, thank you!
She loved the film a series of unfortunate events, I completely forgot, we will get that too. I’ve heard of Artimis Fowl and a couple of others too, we will get reading.

I have a silly concern that we will end up reading her year 5 class book before she gets to read it with the class, and that’s super daft to worry about but I do as a teacher myself! I might even try to ask her teacher now to find out..!

I used to teach this with year 7 and/or 8. Years ago though so maybe things have changed!

If she likes that sort of thing, as well as the Percy Jackson series, there are a couple of other by the same author including an Egyptian mythology series. I will go check the names if interested?
Also, the land of stories series (different take on fairy tale characters)

MooPointCowsOpinion · 08/07/2020 18:21

Oooh ATowelandaPotato I’m definitely interested, sounds great thank you!

The Kane Chronicles, I think

ATowelAndAPotato · 10/07/2020 13:19

Sorry. Took a while - this should be a good start!

Garth Nix - Keys to the Kingdom
Chris Colfer - The Land of Stories
Angie Sage - Septimus Heap
Rick Riordan - Heroes of Olympus (follows on from Percy Jackson)
Rick Riordan - Cane Chronicles
Rick Riordan - Magnus Chase
Chris Riddel - Sky Pirates
Cornelia Funke - Inkheart
Debi Gliori - pure dead magic series (it is for kids!)

It depends how fast she will get through them, they get darker as the series goes on. So the first ones may be appropriate but then the later ones not so much.

DS started them around age 9 but after the first 6 ish he had to wait a year for each one to come out and he still enjoys them now age 15, he gets the latest one every year as a birthday tradition.
