The right dictionary for secondary school

My DS1 finds school work quite challenging. He is starting secondary school in September. The school want him to have a dictionary.

We have a couple of children's dictionaries, but I do not think they will contain all of the words he will require, especially if he is asked to look up specific words. However, I do not think that a proper full sized dictionary will be accessible to him. If he finds it too difficult to use and understand he just will not use it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about which dictionary might suit him best?

Thank you

My DS is the same age and we ditched the Children's dictionary a while ago as it just didn't help with his homework at all.

We bought him a Collins pocket dictionary, still substantial enough to use but small enough to carry in his bag. We already had a large hardback Oxford English Dictionary in the house for homework.

Collins are ideal.

yy second Collins, also if you can find out what foreign language heckle study, a small dictionary for that is a good idea. Would also recommend Collins here, like this:

Thank you everyone. I have ordered a pocket Collins to take to school and a bigger one for home. We have a huge Oxford one, but the size and closely set text puts him off, I think due to his SEN.

I will check again which languages he will be studying at the transition visit. I had not thought of that, thank you.
