Longer books for 5YO to read independently

Looking for recommendations for my DS, who has just turned 5. He's just started reading independently (and constantly!) and has gone through most of the books we already have that aren't too babyish for him. He says his school books are too easy and the libraries in our area aren't open again yet.

I'm struggling to find anything that will hold his attention for longer but isn't too advanced/intimidating for him. We read chapter books before bed (currently on the Boy Who Grew Dragons series) but he's not ready to attempt them by himself.

I'd love some recommendations for chapter books/story collections with fewer words to a page than the standard. Extra points for girls in lead/active roles!

Many thanks!

The puppy place
Series by Ellen miles
There is a companion series featuring cats.

My dd read every single one when she was 5. Absolutely loved them.

My DD is the same and she likes;

Oliver Moon
The Magic Treehouse
Amelia Fang
Ottoline
Roald Dahl (the easier ones like Fantastic Mr Fox)
The Magic Faraway Tree

OP sorry to derail, but how did you get your 4/5 year old to read?

My DD is 4.5 and can only read a few words.

Any tips?

At 5 DD independently enjoyed
Dory Fantasmagory
Isadora Moon
Holly Webb animal stories series

To the pp, ops DS is a precocious reader as was my DD, but at 4.5 it is much more normal to only be sounding out a few words. My DS is about to turn 5 and his reading is very basic, in line with general expectations. They're all different and they even out by about 8 anyway.

Thanks everyone, will check out all your suggestions. Hopefully we can keep the momentum up over the summer!

@lemmathelemmin it was nothing that we did really - his teachers get all the credit for teaching him to read, we just did the usual things of reading to him lots, having lots of books around etc. If your DD is 4.5 presumably she hasn't started reception yet? My DS could only read his own name and recognise individual letters when he started so I certainly don't think your DD is behind if she can read some words.

Dd is the same age and enjoys reading the worst witch. She also really enjoys reading plays, and we got her the rold Dahl plays which she loves. I am reading malory towers to her - she can read the words but they are a bit 'wordy' and she looses concentration before the end of a chapter if she tries to read them independently.

I think it depends on what your child likes to read. Some children like to read fairy tales but some encyclopedias. It's really a personal question. I think you can try "National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Why" or "There's No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System", they are interesting and informative.

The Mr Men and Little Miss books are good for this age. And Dr Seuss.
