I'm reading Stormbreaker - it's absolutely brilliant. So funny and exciting.

Are there lots of mums secretly reading this? And is it wrong for me to fancy Alex Rider, do you think?

Don't be ashamed re the books they ARE brilliant.... I've just finished the whole series! I have a bookworm DD & I like to read what she's into (any excuse !)

As for fancying Alex ........hmmmn

katiepea · 27/09/2007 22:03

I've read them all thanks to my ds aged 10 - try Harry Potter just as good!!

MarsLady · 27/09/2007 22:08

He is indeed. DS1 and DD1 read right through.

Tamum · 27/09/2007 22:11

I haven't read them but I took ds to see him at the Book Festival last month and he was really amusing and frankly rather attractive himself.

bossybritches · 27/09/2007 22:31

Have you read the Philip Pullman Trilogy?

Dark Materials?

bossybritches · 27/09/2007 22:31

Tamum was he really??

MarsLady · 27/09/2007 22:35

He's a local! He's not that attractive Tamum. I think you're over tired!

bossybritches · 27/09/2007 22:36

tee-hee! Where's local Mars?

Tamum · 27/09/2007 22:38

I'm still smarting about the Brownies thing Mars I just thought he had great presence, you know, and that's quite attractive. Better than fancying Alex Rider, anyway

Tamum · 27/09/2007 22:40

Not that bad, surely?

MarsLady · 27/09/2007 22:46

Airbrushed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PMSL (ow my head!)

Tamum · 27/09/2007 22:47

There there. What's wrong with your head?

MarsLady · 27/09/2007 22:50

Heavy head cold (curry and brandy on route), writing forever a 3,000 word essay that has no extension and has to be in Milton Keynes tomorrow. Not a lot of sleep over the last few days (was at 3 births... wonderful!)

MarsLady · 27/09/2007 22:50

Who airbrushed your arse????????????

Tamum · 27/09/2007 22:58

Oh well, you do deserve sympathy

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/09/2007 09:36

Oh fabulous - I thought I was the only grown-up on here reading Alex Rider.
Interesting to see that girls read them as well as boys.
You feeling better Marslady?

I have read Dark Materials and the first few Harry Potter but I much prefer Horowitz. Rowling and Pullman are both interesting writers but I find them both wordy and sometimes slow. I am not too crazy about magic or fantasy and big good-and-evil themes - I like action and a good laugh.
PMSL at the special zit cream and the yoyo! And the evil genius being called Herod!

bossybritches · 28/09/2007 11:21

Absolutely Kathy it's like James Bond fantasy without all the macho stuff!!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/09/2007 11:56

You've got it in one BossyBritches. I've never liked James Bond for just that reason but Alex is a sweetie.

Threadworm · 28/09/2007 11:59

My sons both loved reading all the horovitch books. And there is a similar series by charlie higson about the young james bond. They quite liked those too.

Tamum · 28/09/2007 12:00

Yes yes, but doesn't anyone else think he's quite attractive? Ds also loved the Diamond Brothers books, found them very funny.

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:09

I do Tamum
And ds loved I Know What You Did Last Wednesday, although I had to contend with dh doing his prissy tutting in the background while I explained the punning title
Ds hasn't really connected with Stormbreaker et al, they're great reads but I do think he's a bit young for them tbh

Marina · 28/09/2007 12:10

And quite apart from his chiselled good looks he is also responsible for the magisterial Sunday night veg-outs of Foyle's War...talented chap

Tamum · 28/09/2007 12:23

Hurrah Marina You'll have to plan your next trip up here to coincide with the Book Festival

mumblechum · 03/10/2007 17:21

If you like Horowitz, try the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore.
They double rock.
