ds loves danny the champion of the world and fantastic mr fox. and charlie and chocolate factory.

he is nearly 4.

he is verbally precocious.

'The Giraffe the Pelly and Me' went down well with 5 yr olds and 8yr old recently. 8yr old dd likes reading RD books herself now too.

feetheart · 27/09/2007 13:26

Reading 'The Twits' to DD (4.7) at the moment - we are both LOVING it

SlightlyMadSweden · 27/09/2007 13:29

Book people order coming on then.....set of 10 for £10 I think....

Do you know I was thinking the same thing just the other day but mine was for ds1 to read himself. He reads the Horrid Henry books himself with a little helps so I wondered about Roald Dahl

Carbonel · 27/09/2007 13:33

My dd read the Roald DAhl set from the Book people when she was 5 - some of the more complex stories she left initially but then went back to htem when she was a bit older and enjoyed them

SlightlyMadSweden · 27/09/2007 13:33

I think they could read them themselves (they are 6) but I want to read them together....

we read roald dahl to ds when he was five and he is in year one now and they have the roald dahl books in the classroom for guided reading

Pidge · 27/09/2007 13:44

Dd (5) loved Fantastic Mr Fox and George's Marvellous Medicine, also Charlie and the Choc Factory.

BFG is aimed at older kids methinks - there's loads of fun playing with language - he gets words all muddled up and you only find that funny f you know the original words IYSWIM.

feetheart · 27/09/2007 13:49

SMS - Definitly read to them, LOTS of scope for silly voices

SlightlyMadSweden · 27/09/2007 13:58

OK, so from this list which are the best ones to start with (I have only read a couple myself and can't realy remember them except teh obvious ones...)

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
Danny the Champion of the World
The Witches
George's Marvellous Medicine
Going Solo
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Twits
Matilda
Esio Trot
James and the Giant Peach

DD age 6 claims to be scared of the witches but really enjoyed the others.

I think the twits is fairly easy going and young children just like the silliness of it. The story is fairly simple, so maybe start with that.
