Audiobook recommendations for an 8 year old?

She currently loves reading Horrid Henry. She's just recently started getting in to chapter books and books without pictures. We are going away soon (hopefully!) and have a long drive to get there so I was thinking it might be nice to download some Audiobooks for her. I have Audible so would primarily be using that or the local library service.

I'm going to get the BBC Chronicles of Narnia books as she's got the paperbacks and started reading them but not got very far - think she felt a bit overwhelmed as we bought them a bit too early for her in terms of her reading ability about a year or two ago and she hasn't really gone back to them. But I thought the Audiobook abridged version might be good.

Anyone got any other good suggestions? Thanks!

My 8 year old and 6 year old love the famous five and faraway tree audio books. Quite old fashioned in terms of modern books but they like them.

Anything by Roald Dahl or David Walliams (with the bonus that his books are quite long so can last for a long journey!). We listen to Famous Five on repeat too, I can recite them...

Jacqueline Wilson (Hetty Feather series) has given us many a peaceful journey up and down the country! My dc also liked Harry Potter and Roald Dahl. Although I'm not a fan, they like some of the David Walliams stories too.

These ideas are fab, thank you. For those who use them when travelling, do you play them through the car system or do you give them their own phone or audio device and they listen through headphones? I often connect mine via bluetooth and listen through the car system when I'm on my own but haven't ever done it with anyone else in the car

I'm rubbish with technology so we just bought the CD sets from Costco/Book People and play them through the car CD player! It's a bit frustrating not being able to listen to radio etc. but I actually really enjoy most of the stories too Grin.

I usually Bluetooth to the car stereo. We do have iPad holders that go on the back of our headrests but they will insist on watching a film if they get hold of their tablets!

The audiobook of Malamander by Thomas Taylor is great - narrated by Alfie Allen.

Are there any sites with free audiobook downloads? I can see audible has free streaming at the moment, but we also have a car journey so would need to download.

DS is 3, though, so I’ll be looking for some slightly simpler ones!

Our local library does ebooks and audiobooks - they use an app called RBdigital and then you put in your library membership number.
