My 6 year old DGS has been given a set of Roald Dahl books and has read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, now on Matilda and seems keen on forging my through the set. I haven’t read most of them myself but have a feeling some might be a bit scary for that age. Which titles do people recommend might be put on my ne side for the time being until he’s older?

The twits and the witches are a bit scary

To be honest, if she’s grand with Matilda then just let her crack on!

The only one I haven’t read with my 6 yo DD is the Witches- mostly because I was scared of it myselfBlush

The beginning of James and the Giant Peach with the parents being eaten by a hippo is a bit grim but the rest is great fun. Same goes for a lot of Roald Dahl actually. They can be dark in places but my DD adored them all and never seemed at all scared.

The witches film is terrifying.

One of mine loved RD books however cannot read James and the giant peach because it frightened her when young. I'd also say the witches and the twits at that age can frighten some.
Esio trot would be a great one (I think it was the BBC that turned it into a drama).

The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me is fine for a 6 year old.

The teacher I support (I'm a TA) reads the whole collection to year two over the course of the year. In the 3 years I've worked with him we had one child a bit scared of being turned into a mouse when he read the witches. Otherwise no problems.

I would certainly avoid the witches, and 'Boy' at this stage. To be honest I think a lot of them aren't suitable for 6 year olds, not necessarily because they're scary, I just think they'd be easier to follow and far better appreciated 2 or 3 years later. As a rule of thumb the skinnier the book the more suitable, so Fantastic Mr Fox, The Magic Finger, The Twits, George's Marvelous Medicine etc I reckon are fine. I would wait a bit with the others.
