I have been reading the Harry Potter books with my now 11yo DD. We are coming to the end of the last book and have really enjoyed them.
What other books would you recommend following on from HP?

Mine also enjoyed the Percy Jackson books (eg and the Lightning Thief)

TitianaTitsling · 23/06/2020 16:16

Any Sir Terry Pratchett! Could maybe start on the Johnny and the Dead series?

BarkandCheese · 23/06/2020 16:19

Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Alex Rider. All of these have been a post Harry Potter hit here.

TyneTeas · 23/06/2020 17:01

Not a series, but Watership Down was a massive favourite for mine at that age too

Igneococcus · 23/06/2020 17:45

Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy is fun and was enjoyed by both my dc.

I haven't read it but my son went back to school yesterday and the teacher is reading 'Podkin one ear' to them, she sent a message to the home learners recommending it and said if they enjoyed Harry Potter it would be a good read.
He says its brilliant so far

Nearly 9 year old DD is enjoying Wee Free Men at the moment as her bedtime story.

blosstree · 23/06/2020 18:18

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/06/2020 04:23

The "Connie Companion" quartet.

Magnificentbeast · 24/06/2020 17:08

Thank you for the suggestions. I will have a chat with dd once we come to terms with finishing HP. Smile

I cannot recommend Skulduggery Pleasant enough.

The Dark is rising
A Wizard of Earthsea

Magnificentbeast · 29/06/2020 19:51

So many titles. It's going to be difficult to choose.

Thank you @mangocoveredlamb for the link. Really helpful.

I'm not sure whether it's 'younger' or 'older than HP but has your DD read Robin Stevens' Unladylike murders series?

There are other series by Rick Riordan than Percy Jackson.

Beachhuts90 · 27/07/2020 20:57

She might enjoy the author Tamora Pierce!

jomartin281271 · 28/07/2020 19:45

Katherine Woodfine's Sinclair Mysteries are very good. Also, the Cogheart Series by Peter Bunzl, Murder Most Unladylike and the Sophie Watson Adventures. Others DD has enjoyed are Journey to the River Sea and To the Edge of the World.

TeenPlusTwenties · 28/07/2020 19:48

Noughts & Crosses? Maybe wait a year or so?
Hunger Games
Divergent series

GrouchyKiwi · 28/07/2020 20:21

I second Tamora Pierce. She has lots of fabulous series for children about that age and up.

Matt Haig has some excellent books.

Duckchick · 01/08/2020 20:24

Another vote for Tamora Pierce - best one to start with is probably Wild Magic with 4 books in the series. There are quite a few series set in the same world so it'll keep her going for quite a while.

Hobbitchild · 17/08/2020 04:52

@Magnificantbeast,
I would recommend the Mysterious Benedict Society books. Also, the books by Beverly Cleary are classics.
Additionally, if you are looking for a free book, I have recently published a free (for a limited time) ebook on Amazon called, “Memory Lane Was Moved”. It is for ages 9-12. If you search for it on Amazon, it should be one of the first results.
Hope this helps!
