Fennel · 24/09/2007 20:28

Most overrated book by primary school teachers: The silver sword. We read it 4 times at primary school in different classes. Honestly. It might be an OK book but I got very very sick of it.

I haven't read any Alan Garner. Did he write The Wolves of Willoughby Chase too?

motherinferior · 24/09/2007 20:28

No, that was Joan Aiken. Who is utterly marvellous.

Charlee · 24/09/2007 20:29

Ooh yes, A Little Princess! I cried when I read it to dd

pooka · 24/09/2007 20:35

Oh yes - the Wolves of Willoughby Chase is fantastic.
And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Fennel · 24/09/2007 20:36

I cry every time we watch our video of Heidi. When Grandfather gets depressed and sits moping on his bench, and Heidi runs up the hill towards him.

pooka · 24/09/2007 20:36

Oh and The Little Princess. Thisis an excellent thread as is bringing back many fond memories.

NotAnOtter · 24/09/2007 20:38

Tom's Midnight Garden
Noel Streatfeild generally
Five Dolls in a House for younger ones
Amazing Mr Blunden
Will think about the other one..

Tamum · 24/09/2007 20:43

Actually I will have Little Princess too. I cried just about the Last Doll, never mind all the rest of it.

NotAnOtter · 24/09/2007 20:47

Marianne Dreams

NotAnOtter · 24/09/2007 20:50

Stig of the Dump

Tamum · 24/09/2007 20:51

Actually I want Polly and the Wolf too.

Bink · 24/09/2007 20:53

Posters should not be allowed to read anyone else's before coming up with their own list.

Right, mine (which means most influential on me):

Norton Juster, Phantom Tollbooth
Henry Treece or Geoffrey Trease, who knows (or cares - but presumably they care, furiously), The Crown of Violet
Noel Langley, The Land of Green Ginger
Lewis Carroll, both Alices - but possibly more Through the Looking Glass

last spot has a lot of contenders, inc. Elizabeth Gouge The Little White Horse or Frances Hodgson Burnett, the little-known The Lost Prince (a tomboy's family romance a la Freud if ever there was one)

janeitebus · 24/09/2007 20:58

Ballet Shoes
Tom's Midnight Garden
Goodnight Mr Tom
Charlotte Sometimes

eed to stick at four as too many are jostling for 5th position - they include: The baby Who Wouldn't Go To Bed / LullabyHullabaloo / 5 Minute's Peace / So Much / The Blue Balloon - could go on and on!!!!
