Books with happy endings for my 9 year old DD

DD had a bit of an outburst last night that all the books she has read recently have made her feel a bit sad at the end.
With hindsight I have maybe been a bit blasé about the themes in some of them as I have sourced them from recommendations and not read them myself.
I desperately don't want to put her off and she does enjoy them enormously at the time but she obviously isnt able to process some of the more complex themes so maybe I need to separate some books off for us to read together .

The books she has read recently are - The Girl who speak bear , Katy by Jaqueline Wilson, the Girl of Ink and stars and a Pinch of Magic .
She loves myths and magic and adventure stories. She loves animals too.
There are loads of recommendations on here for her age group but I really need to make sure the endings are happy !

Can anyone help ?

The Travels of Oggy
Olga da Polga
101 Dalmatians
Anne of Green Gables
A Little White Horse

Enid Blyton - The "Adventure" series, the " Barney" series, and the "Secret Island" series. Or the "circus" books, and the Famous Five.
Jacqueline Wilson is always depressing, and some of hers are for teens rather than youngsters, I wouldn't give any to a 9 year old that I hadn't read first tbh.
The Trebizon series is good, a modern day boarding school setting.
Nicholas Fisk writes sci fi for children.
What about Peter Pan, Wind in the Willows, or Alice in Wonderland?

Maybe go old school, the theme used to be put child in peril go through dangerous/difficult experience come out triumphant at the end.
So Anne of Green Gables, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Black Beauty.
Or more light-hearted The Bobbsey Twins, Babysitters Club, or the Alex Ryder books?

Katy by Jacqueline Wilson has a happy-ish ending. Katy accepts she will never walk again and learns to live her new life. Maybe chat to your daughter about why she thinks that is sad. I think it is a positive ending.

Another one voting for the original (Dodie Smith not Disney) 101 Dalmatians and The Twilight Barking.

The Narnia books - start with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

The Enid Blyton school stories - Mallory Towers and St Claires

My oldest daughter also loved Home Farm Twins and the Animal Ark books as well.

Finding Gobi
Snow Foal
Hero Pup by Megan Rix
Matilda
Starfell
Rooftoppers

schmalex · 11/06/2020 18:51

Yes, Rooftoppers is fab! As are Katherine Rundell's other books.
The Polar Bear Explorers' Club series is fun.

My Dd (10) and Ds (8) always go back to the Humphrey Hamster stories (Betty Birney) when they want some light hearted animal fun. They're about a hamster class pet who helps members of his class 😊

Thanks so much for all these ideas ! Sorry to leave the thread so long.
I will spend some time looking through them all - I think she would love Black Beauty but for some reason I always thought that one was sad !
There are quite a few I have tried to get her to look at previously such as Roald Dahl , Enid Blyton and C.S Lewis but i will revisit as maybe she will listen to my suggestions more.
@bookmum08 I agree about Katy having a positive ending and did try to have a conversation along those lines but I think this is where she just isn't quite mature enough to cope with the content and I do take your point @PomBearWithoutHerOFRS that I should probably pre read but I can't keep up with her reading speed at the moment.
Next time it's one I am not sure about I will suggest we read together.

@BlueChampagne I wouldn't say Anne of Green Gables has a happy ending what with Matthew dying and all! I'm usually in floods of tears by the end.

eddiemairswife · 12/06/2020 17:16

Black Beauty is sad

AiryFairy1 · 12/06/2020 17:18

The Incredible Journey
Another vote for Katherine Rundell books and 101 Dalmatians (& Starlight Barking the sequel)
The Boy Who Grew Dragons (& sequels)
The Wombles!
The Secret Dragon Ed Clarke
The Land of Roar

Thebookswereherfriends · 12/06/2020 17:27

Black beauty is desperately sad! Don’t give her that!
Journey to the river sea and others by Eva ibbotson are usually happy endings.

Mandy by Julie Andrews, it's a lovely story about a girl who is in care & finds a deserted cottage in the woods, she spends all her spare time cleaning it up & making it her own, the owner of the cottage finds out & at the end adopts her.
