Alternatives to Beano

My eldest daughter likes reading her Beano comics to my youngest (10 and 3 years old). I hate the content and pictures but my mother buys her them. I was wondering if anyone could suggest anything comic book typeish that would be a pleasanter replacement! Doesn’t have to be a magazine, would welcome book suggestions. It’s the comic format she enjoys.

"The Phoenix" is brilliant, look it up online.

I’m not a massive Beano fan either but ten year old DS absolutely adores them, as did his brother before him, reads and re reads them constantly, giggles and tells me the “jokes”, and litters the house with them. I just figure I don’t have to like everything he reads! But to answer your question, he also likes my Calvin and Hobbes books, also comic format, even though a lot of the jokes go way over his head. There is also Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Tom Gates - not completely comic book format but containing comic book elements - and Captain Underpants. I don’t know if they would enthrall the three year old though, or if you would consider them more pleasant!

Captain's Underpants books are brilliant but if you don't like the naughty-ness and toilet humour of the Beano then they won't be for you ! Although how old is your daughter? (You say the younger two are 7 and 10). There's are some brilliant graphic novels for pre teens. I especially love ones by Raina Telgemeier and Victoria Jamieson.
Does she want 'funnies' (ie short joke cartoons) or a proper story? If stories then there are some reproduction books available of stories from comics of the 1970/80s (eg from Tammy comic etc). They are published by Rebellion Publishing.

Ds 9 and Dd7 love Beano and also Phoenix.

bookmum08 · 21/05/2020 18:49

Sorry miss read the ages. Is your daughter the 10 year old? If yes then the suggestions I had are good for that age.
Also The Phoenix Comic as someone has already suggested.
Books like Tin Tin are good for a good long story.

Eldest is 10 and the youngest is 3. It is the general naughty behaviour I object to. I lean towards pearl clutching 😁
The short story format and bright colours hold my 3 year olds attention.
The old comics from the ‘50s never occurred to me! Thanks for all the suggestions. Will investigate!

If it's to read aloud to the three year old then how about a comic aimed at that age group - cbeebies comic for example. It's been a few years since I've been reading those (my girl is 12 now) so I am not sure entirely what's out there now. Cbeebies Comic and two called Fun to Learn Favourites and Fun to Learn Friends were the ones we read most. Unfortunately they do come with a toy each issue - although some are quite good toys. We still have some like the pretend chip and pin machine and plastic money !!

We did read the Beano for several years - but yes all the fart jokes get a bit tedious after a while.

TorkTorkBam · 21/05/2020 21:15

The Beano is for degenerates. That is hilarious.

Do not let them read any Roald Dahl. The child protagonists often murder their insane adults.

meloraspalm · 21/05/2020 21:18

Yes we buy the CBeebies one. It’s more activity based with only one story though. Have had a look at older annuals on eBay and the Lucie Attwell annuals look cute and bright. Despite being 70 years old. I’ll give them a try. Have also ordered the Phoenix comic for the eldest, it doesn’t look too awful and she’d enjoy it. Thanks for all your suggestions!

It’s not the zaniness I object to. It’s the lack of general respect towards those in authority and the crude nature of the jokes. I don’t want my youngest to start parroting the stuff (which is what they do at that age!).

I did find it annoying that there wasn't much of actual stories in cbeebies etc. I remember the first comic I regularly brought for my daughter was Thomas the Tank. It usually had 4 separate stories. She was about 18 months ish and just liked to listen to stories and too young for all the activity based ones ! The only downside to that was it was Thomas the Boring Tank Grin

SeraphinaDombegh · 21/05/2020 21:26

Here to add my voice to the chorus of "try the Phoenix". It's excellent - we all love reading it in this house.

Bobkitten · 21/05/2020 21:37

My 10 year old who enjoys the Beano also loves Tintin, Calvin & Hobbes and the Asterix books. Not sure what to suggest for the 3 year old though!
